Amavasya Tithi: Every Day It Held Sunrise, 2026 and 2027

12 days in 2026 · 13 in 2027 · sunrise at New Delhi

Amavasya is the 30th of the 30 tithis, the dark fortnight’s 15th. A panchang names a day by the tithi running at sunrise, and between 1 January 2026 and 31 December 2027 Amavasya was the tithi at sunrise in New Delhi on 25 days: 12 in 2026 and 13 in 2027. It never fell between two sunrises without holding one, and it never held two sunrises in a row.

Amavasya is neither rikta nor favoured, but the muhurat filter rejects it outright for every occasion, so none of its 25 days is offered as a muhurat day. A list of the days a tithi held sunrise is not a list of vrat days: an observance tied to a tithi is fixed by its own rule, which the festival pages apply one by one.

By weekday, Amavasya held sunrise most often on Mondays and Tuesdays (5 times) and least on Wednesdays (1): Sunday 3, Monday 5, Tuesday 5, Wednesday 1, Thursday 4, Friday 4, Saturday 3. Over two years that spread is chance, not a pattern; the weekday and the tithi run on unrelated cycles.

Festivals that fell on an Amavasya day: Gudi Padwa (19 March 2026), Shani Jayanti (16 May 2026), Sarva Pitru Amavasya (10 October 2026), Shani Jayanti (4 June 2027), Sharad Navratri begins (30 September 2027), Sarva Pitru Amavasya (30 September 2027) and Diwali (29 October 2027).

Every New Moon, 2026 to 2028

The Amavasya ends at the new moon itself. The lunation table gives each one’s instant in IST, the same moment everywhere, with the Moon’s sidereal sign and nakshatra.

In the cycle Amavasya comes after Krishna Chaturdashi and before Shukla Pratipada; all 30 are on the tithi index. For what the five limbs are and how a day’s panchang is read, see reading the panchang and the guide to choosing a day. This page in Hindi: अमावस्या तिथि.
