Jupiter in Purva Phalguni Nakshatra (Guru in पूर्व फाल्गुनी)

Purva Phalguni, the 11th of the 27 nakshatras, covers 133°20′ – 146°40′ of the sidereal zodiac, wholly inside Leo. Purva Phalguni is ruled by Venus, so Jupiter in Purva Phalguni stands in Venus’s star.

Jupiter counts Venus an enemy, while Venus counts Jupiter neutral. The table is not symmetric, so Jupiter in Purva Phalguni has to be described from both sides, as it is here. The other two nakshatras Venus rules, Bharani and Purva Ashadha, put Jupiter under the same star lord.

Jupiter in Purva Phalguni, Pada by Pada

By rashi, Jupiter is in a friend's sign in all four padas of Purva Phalguni, because the whole nakshatra lies in Leo. By navamsa the four padas fall in Leo, Virgo, Libra and Scorpio. Jupiter’s strongest navamsas in Purva Phalguni are padas 1 (Leo, in a friend's sign) and 4 (Scorpio, in a friend's sign), and its weakest are padas 2 (Virgo, in an enemy's sign) and 3 (Libra, in an enemy's sign).

Purva Phalguni pada 1 is vargottama — Leo in rashi and in navamsa — so Jupiter there is in a friend's sign on both counts. Of the 108 padas only twelve are vargottama, one for each sign.

Neither Jupiter’s deepest exaltation (Cancer) nor its deepest debilitation (Capricorn) degree falls inside Purva Phalguni, and Jupiter’s moolatrikona lies outside it as well, so in Purva Phalguni the rashi and navamsa verdicts above are the whole of Jupiter’s dignity.

Inside Purva Phalguni: what the tables locate there for Jupiter

Of the ten complete spells Jupiter has in the table, in any nakshatra, the shortest is 62 days and the longest 152; the Purva Phalguni spells, at 65 and 99 days, sit inside that range.

• 31 August 2027: Jupiter meets the Sun at 13° Leo, within a quarter of a degree of Purva Phalguni’s edge, so another ayanamsa may put the meeting in the neighbouring nakshatra.

The retrograde table runs from 2024 to 2031, wider than the ingress table, and it places one of Jupiter's stations in Purva Phalguni. On 14 May 2028 Jupiter stations direct inside Purva Phalguni, in pada 3. At a station Jupiter’s motion is at its slowest, so these are the days it is most nearly still in Purva Phalguni.

Purva Phalguni as the Setting for Jupiter

In the nakshatra tables Purva Phalguni’s deity is listed as Bhaga and its symbol as front of bed; its gana is Manushya, and the muhurta texts put it in the Ugra class (fierce). Those belong to Purva Phalguni whichever graha is in it, and they are read on the Purva Phalguni page. What changes with Jupiter is everything above: the dignities in Leo, the relation to Venus, and the dates. None of it is a prediction for anyone born with Jupiter in Purva Phalguni; the house it occupies and the dasha running decide what the placement does in a chart.
