This report sets out what was computed from the birth details given, and what the classical tradition associates with each position. It is a reference document, not a prediction: nothing in it is a finding about anyone's health, money, legal position or future, and it should not be used as a reason for a medical, financial or legal decision.
The two Moons
Every one of the eight kootas is a function of one thing per person: the Moon's sidereal position at birth, as a nakshatra and a pada. The rest of each chart is set out further down.
| Moon sign | Nakshatra | Pada | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bride: Asha (sample) | Aquarius 2°46′ | Dhanishta | 3 |
| Groom: Ravi (sample) | Capricorn 20°17′ | Shravana | 4 |
Ashtakoot: the eight kootas
| Koota | What it compares | Values | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | the varna of each Moon sign, ranked | Groom: Vaishya · Bride: Shudra | 1 of 1 |
| Vashya | which of the five vashya groups each Moon sign falls in | Groom: Jalachar · Bride: Manav | 0–1 of 2 |
| Tara | the count of birth stars from each partner's nakshatra to the other's | Counting from Bride: Ati-Mitra (9) · from Groom: Sampat (2) | 3 of 3 |
| Yoni | the animal the tradition assigns to each birth star | Groom: Monkey · Bride: Lion | 1–3 of 4 |
| Graha Maitri | how the two Moon-sign lords regard each other on the friendship table | Groom: Saturn · Bride: Saturn | 5 of 5 |
| Gana | the gana of each birth star: Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa | Groom: Deva · Bride: Rakshasa | 1 of 6 |
| Bhakoot | the distance between the two Moon signs | Capricorn and Aquarius — 12/2 | 0 of 7 |
| Nadi | the nadi of each birth star: Adi, Madhya or Antya | Groom: Antya (Kapha) · Bride: Madhya (Pitta) | 8 of 8 |
Where the published tables grade an intermediate pair differently, the koota is given as a range and the total carries it.
The total is 19 to 22 of 36. On the conventional bands that falls in the one labelled “Acceptable”. The tradition treats the total as the start of a reading, not its result: which kootas scored nothing matters more than the sum. Here Bhakoot scored zero.
Varna: 1 of 1
The groom's varna equals or exceeds the bride's, which is what this koota tests, so it scores its single guna.
Vashya: 0–1 of 2
Jalachar with Manav is one of the intermediate pairs, and published tables grade it anywhere from half a guna to one. We show the range rather than pick a lineage's version and call it exact.
Tara: 3 of 3
Neither count lands on the third, fifth or seventh tara, so both directions are favourable and the koota is full.
Yoni: 1–3 of 4
Monkey with Lion is neither the same animal nor a hostile pair, so it falls in the graded middle — published tables give one, two or three guna for pairs like this depending on the lineage.
Graha Maitri: 5 of 5
Both Moon signs are ruled by Saturn, so the lords cannot be anything but in accord. Graha Maitri is the mental-compatibility koota and carries five guna. It is the most finely graded of the eight — six different scores are possible here, more than any other koota allows — so it is the test most likely to move a total by a fraction rather than all at once.
Gana: 1 of 6
Deva with Rakshasa scores 1 of six, and this koota is directional — the same two ganas score differently if the partners are swapped, because a gentle temperament matched to a forceful one is held to bear the cost unevenly.
Bhakoot: 0 of 7
The signs stand 2/12 from each other, which is Dwirdwadasha — one of the three forbidden Bhakoot distances, scoring zero of seven. Two classical exceptions cancel this dosha: the two signs sharing a lord, or their two lords being mutual friends. The first of those applies here on the face of it: both Moon signs are ruled by Saturn. That is settled by the Moon signs alone, so a chart is needed to weigh the cancellation rather than to discover it. Either way the koota still scores zero, because cancelling a dosha is a judgement about the dosha and not a re-scoring of the koota.
Nadi: 8 of 8
The two nadis differ — Antya (Kapha) and Madhya (Pitta) — so the heaviest koota in the system is full at eight. Nadi is all-or-nothing and is the only koota that alone accounts for more than a fifth of the total.
What Ashtakoot does not test, from the two charts
The matching tables leave most of each chart unread. The tool lists what is left out:
- The seventh house of either chart, its lord, and any planet sitting in it — the house of marriage itself contributes nothing to the 36 guna.
- Venus and Mars, which between them carry most of what an astrologer reads about attraction, desire and marital friction.
- Mangal Dosha. It is checked separately and is not one of the eight kootas, despite being the objection families raise most often.
- The running Vimshottari dasha of either partner, which decides when a marriage is favoured rather than whether the pair matches.
- Every planet's strength, aspect and dignity — Ashtakoot uses only the Moon, so two people with identical Moons score identically no matter what the rest of their charts say.
Those are given below for both charts, as facts. They are not scored and they do not change the total above.
The seventh house and its lord
Asha (sample): the seventh house falls in Pisces, ruled by Jupiter, which sits in Libra in the second house. None of the seven grahas placed here occupies the seventh. See the seventh lord in the second house.
Ravi (sample): the seventh house falls in Capricorn, ruled by Saturn, which sits in Capricorn in the seventh house. The Sun, the Moon, Venus and Saturn occupy the seventh. See the seventh lord in the seventh house.
Venus and Mars
In the classical scheme Venus is the karaka of marriage, vehicles, art, music, luxury, hotels and cosmetics. In the classical scheme Mars is the karaka of younger siblings, land and property, weapons, engineering and the armed forces.
Asha (sample): Venus is 20°04′ Virgo, first house, Hasta pada 4. Virgo is the sign of Venus's debilitation in the classical tables. Mars is 9°04′ Gemini, tenth house, Ardra pada 1. Gemini is ruled by Mercury, which Mars's row in the friendship table lists as an enemy.
Ravi (sample): Venus is 21°41′ Capricorn, seventh house, Shravana pada 4. Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, which Venus's row in the friendship table lists as a friend. Mars is 5°33′ Taurus, eleventh house, Krittika pada 3. Taurus is ruled by Venus, which Mars's row in the friendship table lists as neutral.
Mangal Dosha is not assessed in this report. Mars's house is given as a fact; whether it constitutes the dosha depends on reckonings and cancellations that the free Mangal Dosha tool sets out.
The running dasha, both charts
The dasha decides when the tradition looks for events, not whether a pair is matched, so it is given as two timelines rather than compared. These are the antardashas running in the next ten years for each chart.

What this report does not include
- A match verdict. The kootas are scored by their own rules; nothing else in this report is scored.
- Mangal Dosha and every other dosha verdict.
- Rahu and Ketu, which this engine does not place in a birth chart.
- Divisional charts, including the navamsa.
- Remedies of any kind.
How this was computed
- Ayanamsa at birth: 23°46′ (Lahiri-type). Positions are sidereal.
- Moon and Sun from a truncated ELP-2000 lunar theory and the solar longitude, checked day by day against NASA/JPL's DE421 ephemeris.
- Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn from JPL Keplerian elements, within 3.2 arcminutes of DE421 between 1900 and 2050.
- Lagna from apparent sidereal time and the true obliquity at Pune (18.52°, 73.86°). Houses are whole signs, the North Indian convention.
- Vimshottari periods from the Moon's nakshatra and the balance it leaves at birth, on the solar year of 365.2425 days. Programs that use the classical 360-day year give dates that drift a few weeks apart late in a long period; neither is a correction of the other.
