Mercury Retrograde 2029: Dates, Signs and Stations

Four windows opening in 2029 · 87 days between stations · Capricorn, Sagittarius, Taurus, Aries, Virgo and Leo

Mercury turns retrograde four times in 2029: 7 January to 28 January 2029, 2 May to 26 May 2029, 2 September to 25 September 2029 and 22 December to 11 January 2030. Counting only the calendar days of 2029, Mercury is retrograde on 81 of them.

The first window: 7 January to 28 January, in Capricorn and Sagittarius

Mercury stations retrograde on 7 January 2029 at 9°22′ Capricorn, in Uttara Ashadha, and stations direct on 28 January 2029 at 23°16′ Sagittarius, in Purva Ashadha. Between the two stations it travels back 16.1° of the zodiac over 20 days.

9°22′ Capricorn, the 7 January station, is in Uttara Ashadha pada 4, the Pisces navamsa. 23°16′ Sagittarius, the 28 January station, is in Purva Ashadha, close enough to a pada edge that the pada depends on the ayanamsa. The arc between them spans 6 padas, from Purva Ashadha pada 3 up to Uttara Ashadha pada 4, and Mercury crosses every degree of it three times: forward before 7 January, backward until 28 January, and forward again afterwards. Mercury is in a neutral sign in Capricorn and in a neutral sign in Sagittarius.

That arc crosses a sign boundary, so the 7 January retrograde of 2029 begins in Capricorn and ends in Sagittarius. The day of that backward re-entry is outside the 2026–2028 ingress table, so this page does not give one.

The site’s ingress, nakshatra and conjunction tables run from 2026 to 2028, so for the 2029 window they have nothing to add, and this page adds nothing in their place.

One caution on the direct station of this window: it falls close to midnight IST, so another ephemeris, or a listing kept in another time zone, can put 28 January 2029 on the neighbouring day without either being wrong.

It begins 110 days after the previous Mercury retrograde began on 19 September 2028, and 88 days after that one ended.

The second window: 2 May to 26 May, in Taurus and Aries

Mercury stations retrograde on 2 May 2029 at 2°25′ Taurus, in Krittika, and stations direct on 26 May 2029 at 23°18′ Aries, in Bharani. Between the two stations it travels back 9.1° of the zodiac over 24 days.

2°25′ Taurus, the 2 May station, is in Krittika pada 2, the Capricorn navamsa. 23°18′ Aries, the 26 May station, is in Bharani, close enough to a pada edge that the pada depends on the ayanamsa. The arc between them spans 4 padas, from Bharani pada 3 up to Krittika pada 2, and Mercury crosses every degree of it three times: forward before 2 May, backward until 26 May, and forward again afterwards. Mercury is in a friend's sign in Taurus and in a neutral sign in Aries.

That arc crosses a sign boundary, so the 2 May retrograde of 2029 begins in Taurus and ends in Aries. The day of that backward re-entry is outside the 2026–2028 ingress table, so this page does not give one.

The site’s ingress, nakshatra and conjunction tables run from 2026 to 2028, so for the 2029 window they have nothing to add, and this page adds nothing in their place.

One caution on the direct station of this window: it falls close to midnight IST, so another ephemeris, or a listing kept in another time zone, can put 26 May 2029 on the neighbouring day without either being wrong.

It begins 115 days after the previous Mercury retrograde began on 7 January 2029, and 94 days after that one ended.

The third window: 2 September to 25 September, in Virgo and Leo

Mercury stations retrograde on 2 September 2029 at 7°34′ Virgo, in Uttara Phalguni, and stations direct on 25 September 2029 at 23°11′ Leo, in Purva Phalguni. Between the two stations it travels back 14.4° of the zodiac over 23 days.

7°34′ Virgo, the 2 September station, is in Uttara Phalguni pada 4, the Pisces navamsa. 23°11′ Leo, the 25 September station, is in Purva Phalguni, close enough to a pada edge that the pada depends on the ayanamsa. The arc between them spans 6 padas, from Purva Phalguni pada 3 up to Uttara Phalguni pada 4, and Mercury crosses every degree of it three times: forward before 2 September, backward until 25 September, and forward again afterwards. Mercury is exalted in Virgo and in a friend's sign in Leo.

That arc crosses a sign boundary, so the 2 September retrograde of 2029 begins in Virgo and ends in Leo. The day of that backward re-entry is outside the 2026–2028 ingress table, so this page does not give one.

The site’s ingress, nakshatra and conjunction tables run from 2026 to 2028, so for the 2029 window they have nothing to add, and this page adds nothing in their place.

It begins 123 days after the previous Mercury retrograde began on 2 May 2029, and 99 days after that one ended.

The fourth window: 22 December to 11 January 2030, in Sagittarius

Mercury stations retrograde on 22 December 2029 at 23°26′ Sagittarius, in Purva Ashadha, and stations direct on 11 January 2030 at 7°10′ Sagittarius, in Mula. Between the two stations it travels back 16.3° of the zodiac over 20 days.

23°26′ Sagittarius, the 22 December station, is in Purva Ashadha, close enough to a pada edge that the pada depends on the ayanamsa. 7°10′ Sagittarius, the 11 January station, is in Mula pada 3, the Gemini navamsa. The arc between them spans 6 padas, from Mula pada 3 up to Purva Ashadha pada 4, and Mercury crosses every degree of it three times: forward before 22 December, backward until 11 January, and forward again afterwards. Mercury is in a neutral sign in Sagittarius.

The whole 16.3° lies inside Sagittarius, so for the 22 December retrograde of 2029 there is no sign change to date: Mercury in Sagittarius covers all 20 days.

The site’s ingress, nakshatra and conjunction tables run from 2026 to 2028, so for the 2029 window they have nothing to add, and this page adds nothing in their place.

It begins 111 days after the previous Mercury retrograde began on 2 September 2029, and 88 days after that one ended.

How 2029 Compares With Mercury’s Other Windows

Across the 25 Mercury retrogrades the site computes from 2024 to 2031, a window lasts 20 to 24 days between stations and retraces 8.6° to 16.3°. The 2029 windows run 20 days (16.1°), 24 days (9.1°), 23 days (14.4°) and 20 days (16.3°).

Every date here is a day, never a time. A planet at a station is barely moving, so the minute it turns is the least stable figure in the table; for Mercury in 2029 the day is what two careful sources will agree on.
