Next Kumbh Mela: Kumbh Years by Jupiter's Sign, 1974-2050
Published 2026-10-29 | Live Pandit Ji
The Kumbh Mela moves between four river towns: Haridwar, Prayagraj, Nashik with Trimbakeshwar, and Ujjain. Each town’s year is not a fixed count of calendar years. In the reckoning the mela calendar uses, it is set by where Jupiter (Guru) stands in the zodiac, taken together with the Sun’s sign, and the rule is different at each site. That is why people ask both “when is the next Kumbh” and “why every twelve years”, and why the answer to the second is that the gap is not quite twelve.
This page takes the four rules as the English Wikipedia article on the Kumbh Mela tabulates them, and tests every year from 1974 to 2050 against the sidereal (Lahiri) positions of Jupiter and the Sun in the site’s DE421 sign table. All 20 Kumbh years in that article’s list for 1974–2028 meet their site’s rule. Run forward, the same test gives the years below. The next Kumbh gatherings are Haridwar’s Ardh Kumbh in 2027, which follows a six-year count rather than a sign rule, and Nashik’s Simhastha in 2027.
The Rule at Each Site
In the article’s table each site pairs a sign for Jupiter with a sign for the Sun. Jupiter stays about a year in a sign; the Sun stays about a month. So a rule usually holds for the one solar month that falls inside Jupiter’s year in the right sign. When Jupiter’s stay runs a little over twelve months, it can catch part of the same solar month in two calendar years, as Nashik shows below.
| Site | River | Sign rule tested here |
|---|---|---|
| Haridwar | Ganga | Jupiter in Kumbha (Aquarius), Sun in Mesha (Aries) |
| Prayagraj (Taurus form) | Ganga and Yamuna | Jupiter in Vrishabha (Taurus), Sun in Makara (Capricorn) |
| Prayagraj (Aries form) | Ganga and Yamuna | Jupiter in Mesha (Aries), Sun in Makara (Capricorn) |
| Nashik-Trimbak | Godavari | Jupiter and the Sun in Simha (Leo) |
| Ujjain | Shipra | Jupiter in Simha (Leo), Sun in Mesha (Aries) |
The article’s table gives Prayagraj two forms. The Aries form also places the Moon in Capricorn with the Sun, which happens around a new moon; that Moon condition is not tested here, only the Jupiter-and-Sun half. Nashik and Ujjain each have a second form in the article, also tied to a new moon, and those are not tested either. A day counts as meeting a rule when both grahas hold the named signs at noon IST that day.

“Kumbh year” means the year appears as a Kumbh (Purna or Maha) for that site in the Wikipedia list, which runs from 1974 to 2028. Every listed year is in this table, and every one meets its rule. The rows marked “not listed for this site” are years in which the sky met a rule but the list names a neighbouring year instead; the next sections take them in turn.
Why Twelve Years, and Why Haridwar Waited Eleven
Jupiter goes round the zodiac in 11.86 years, about seven weeks short of twelve years, so its returns to a sign creep earlier in the calendar (Aquarius: 9 February 1974, 25 January 1986, 8 January 1998), and every so often the month the rule needs slips into the previous year. Haridwar shows it. Its rule needs Jupiter in Aquarius while the Sun is in Aries, which is mid-April to mid-May. Jupiter reached Aquarius on 1 May 2009, part-way through the Sun’s Aries month, so 2009 met the rule at noon on 13 days (2 May – 14 May) and 2010 on the other 18 (14 Apr – 1 May). The list names 2010.
By the next round Jupiter came to Aquarius on 6 April 2021, before the Sun’s month began, and 2021 held the rule for all 31 days. So the Haridwar Kumbh came eleven years after 2010, not twelve. Jupiter next enters Aquarius on 18 March 2033, again ahead of the Sun’s Aries month, which puts the next full Haridwar Kumbh by this rule in 2033, twelve years after 2021, and the one after in 2045.
Prayagraj: Two Forms of One Rule
Prayagraj’s month is the Sun’s stay in Capricorn, mid-January to mid-February, the season of the Magh Mela. The listed Kumbh of 1977 meets only the Aries form: Jupiter was in Aries that January, and neither 1977 nor 1978 had Jupiter in Taurus while the Sun was in Capricorn. The listed years 1989, 2001, 2013 and 2025 meet only the Taurus form.
Since 1988 the Aries form has also held one year before each Taurus year (1988, 2000, 2012, 2024), and the list puts the Kumbh in the Taurus year each time. Ahead, the Aries form holds in 2036 and the Taurus form in 2037; twelve years from 2025 is 2037. Which year the mela is held in is for the people who run it to announce, and this page does not choose between them. The yearly bathing days at the Sangam, with the tithi behind each, are on the Magh Mela 2027 page.
Nashik 2027 and Ujjain 2028
Both sites take their year from Jupiter in Leo, which is why their gathering is called Simhastha. Nashik pairs it with the Sun in Leo and Ujjain with the Sun in Aries, and in this round the two fall a year apart: Nashik in 2027 (18 Aug – 17 Sep) and Ujjain in 2028 (14 Apr – 14 May). Their next turns by the same test are 2039 and 2040. The Simhastha 2027–28 page tables Jupiter’s three spells in Leo.
Nashik’s rule also held in three years the list does not name: 1979 for 18 days, 1991 for a full month, and 2004 for 11 days. The list gives 1980, 1992 and 2003. In 1991 the rule held for the whole month and in 1992 for 26 days, yet the list names 1992, so the list follows something the two signs do not capture; this page does not guess what.
Ardh Kumbh: Haridwar in 2027
The Ardh (“half”) Kumbh is held at Haridwar and Prayagraj, about six years after each site’s full Kumbh; the Wikipedia article credits this to Kama Maclean’s history of the Prayag mela. The list bears it out at Haridwar: Ardh Kumbh years 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016 and 2027, each six years after a full Kumbh there. Six years after 2021 is 2027. At Prayagraj the listed Ardh years are 1984, 1995, 2007 and 2019; the first came seven years after the 1977 Kumbh, the rest six.
The article’s table gives no sign rule for an Ardh Kumbh. In each listed Haridwar Ardh year from 1980 to 2016, Jupiter happened to be in Leo, the sign opposite Aquarius, through the Sun’s Aries month: half a round on from the Kumbh. In 2027 it will not be. Jupiter enters Leo on 31 October 2026, backs out into Cancer on 25 January 2027 and does not return until 26 June 2027, so it will spend the whole of that month in Cancer. The 2027 Ardh Kumbh therefore rests on the six-year count, not on a sign. Its bathing days are for the mela administration to announce. Of the festivals the article lists for Haridwar, Maha Shivratri falls on 6 March 2027 by the site’s 2027 table; the Maha Shivratri 2027 page gives its tithi.
How Firm Are These Years?
The Sun’s months move by about a day for each degree of difference in the ayanamsa, which can shift a first or last day in the table. Jupiter’s sign entries move much more: at its slow crossings a degree of difference in the ayanamsa moves the entry by days, and a panchang on another ayanamsa may date it differently, as the ayanamsa page explains. That matters only in the split years, such as 2009 and 2010 at Haridwar; a full-month year like 2033 stays a full-month year. Jupiter’s back-and-forth around sign lines in 2026–28 is the subject of the atichari Guru page.
What This Page Does Not Claim
The mela tradition tells of the pot of amrit from the churning of the ocean and the drops that fell at the four sites. The page reports the story as the tradition’s and says nothing about what a dip does for anyone. It gives no crowd figures, no travel advice and no snan list. The Wikipedia article notes that the name “Maha Kumbh” has been used to publicise certain melas said to carry an alignment not repeated for 144 years, among them 2025. That figure is twelve twelves; the sign test on this page has no 144-year term, and the page does not test the claim.
In Brief
- Haridwar Ardh Kumbh: 2027, six years after the 2021 Kumbh
- Nashik-Trimbak Simhastha: 2027, then by the sign rule 2039
- Ujjain Simhastha: 2028, then by the sign rule 2040
- Haridwar Kumbh by the sign rule: 2033, then 2045
- Prayagraj Kumbh: the rule holds in 2036 (Aries form) and 2037 (Taurus form); twelve years from 2025 is 2037
- Why not exactly twelve: Jupiter’s round is 11.86 years; Haridwar went from 2010 to 2021 in eleven
Jupiter’s move into Leo on 31 October 2026, and which house Leo is from each Moon sign, are on the Jupiter in Leo 2026 page. The year’s observances are on the festival calendar. In Hindi: अगला कुंभ मेला कब है: गुरु की राशि से कुंभ वर्ष, 1974-2050.
