Pisces Personality Traits: What the Rashi Fixes, and What It Leaves Open

The dates you were given are almost certainly Feb 19 – Mar 20. That is the tropical range, and it is set from the spring equinox. Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac, which is set from the stars themselves, and the equinox has been drifting against the stars by about a degree every 72 years — the gap is now roughly 24 degrees. Sidereal Pisces runs Mar 15 – Apr 13, which opens 24 days later than the range you know.

The consequence is arithmetic rather than interpretation. Of the 30 days in tropical Pisces, 24 fall inside sidereal Aquarius (Feb 13 – Mar 14) and 6 are sidereally Pisces. So most people holding a Western date table and reading themselves as Pisces are Aquarius in a Vedic chart, and every classical statement below applies to the other sign for them.

A second correction sits on top of that one: a rashifal is read from the Moon sign, not the Sun sign, and the FAQ below covers why. So a Western date table hands you a sign that is both possibly the wrong one and certainly the secondary one. Casting a free Kundli settles both at once.

A nakshatra spans 13°20′ and a pada a quarter of that, 3°20′. Thirty degrees divides into exactly nine padas with nothing left over, which is why every rashi touches exactly three nakshatras and why the arithmetic below has no rounding in it.

Each of those nine padas carries three lords, not one. The rashi lord is Jupiter for all nine — that is the part Pisces fixes. The nakshatra lord changes three times across the sign. The navamsa lord — the ruler of the D-9 sign the pada falls into — changes at every single pada, and because the nine navamsas of a rashi are nine consecutive signs while five of the seven grahas own two signs each, Pisces runs through 7 distinct navamsa lords rather than nine: Moon, Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.

One of the nine is different in kind. In pada 9 — 26°40′–30°00′, which is Revati pada 4 — the navamsa sign is Pisces itself, so the rashi lord and the navamsa lord are both Jupiter and the two divisions agree. That is vargottama, classically the strongest of the nine, and its position is fixed by the mobility class rather than chosen: a movable sign is vargottama in its first pada, a fixed sign in its fifth, a dual sign in its ninth. Pisces is Dvisvabhava, so it falls at 26°40′.

The naisargika friendship table decides how the first two get on, and for Pisces it divides the nine padas unevenly: 1 of the nine are ruled by Jupiter itself, 4 of the nine carry one Jupiter is neutral toward and 4 of the nine carry one whose friendship with it runs only one way.

This is the sharpest divergence inside a single rashi, and it is not a matter of temperament at all. Vimshottari dasha assigns the whole of a life to a sequence of nine planetary periods totalling 120 years, and the period you are born into is decided by the Moon’s nakshatra — not by the rashi. Pisces contains three nakshatras, so it contains three different entry points into that sequence.

Ashtakoota matching scores 36 guna across eight kootas, and four of them — Nadi, Gana, Yoni and Tara, worth 21 of the 36 between them — are read from the nakshatra rather than the rashi. So the sign contributes nothing to well over half the score, and two people of the same sign can land on opposite sides of it.

Nadi is the clearest case because it is the heaviest single koota at 8 guna and it is all-or-nothing: two charts sharing a nadi score zero on it, whatever else matches. Pisces holds all three: Adi (Vata), Madhya (Pitta) and Antya (Kapha). Two Pisces natives matched against the same partner can therefore differ by the full 8 guna on Nadi alone, before a single other test is read.

Gana works the same way with less weight — 6 guna, from a Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa temperament assigned per nakshatra. Pisces spans two of the three, Manushya and Deva. Yoni Koota is 4 guna and turns on an animal assigned per nakshatra — Lion, Cow and Elephant here, and a hostile pair scores zero of the 4. Pisces also contains Revati, a Gandmool nakshatra sitting on a rashi junction, for which shanti puja is traditionally prescribed — and the other 2 nakshatras of Pisces carry no such prescription.

The practical version: a rashi-to-rashi comparison is a screen, not a match. Sign-pair compatibility reads the three kootas two Moon signs are enough for, and says so; full Ashtakoota matching needs both birth nakshatras for the other five.

Four things, and they hold for all nine padas. The rashi lord is Jupiter, so every planet placed in Pisces is a guest in Jupiter’s sign and is read partly through it. The element is Water, which in Ashtakoota’s Varna Koota makes Meena a Brahmin sign. The mobility is Dvisvabhava — dual — which is what an astrologer reads first when choosing a muhurta. And in the Kalapurusha, the zodiac mapped onto a body, Meena is the feet.

The dignities are the other genuinely fixed thing: Venus at 27° is the exaltation point here, and Mercury at 15° is the debilitation.
