Purnima Moonrise Time 2026-2027: Full Moon, 12 Cities

Published 2026-10-28 | Live Pandit Ji

The next full moon falls at 20:23 IST on 24 November 2026, the end of the Kartik Purnima tithi that begins at 23:42 the night before. On 24 November 2026, the Kartik Purnima day, the Moon rises at 16:56 at New Delhi, 28 minutes before the 17:24 sunset, so it is already above the eastern horizon as the Sun goes down. The next evening, 25 November 2026, it rises at 17:55, 31 minutes after sunset.

The first half of that holds in all 14 months of this window: on the last sunset before a full moon the Moon is already up. The second half is the one that varies, by minutes either side of sunset. So the question “what time does the Purnima Moon rise” has an answer measured against sunset rather than against the clock, and it differs between the evening before the full moon and the evening after it. Below are those evenings for every full moon to the end of 2027, then twelve cities for the three full moons before the end of January 2027.

How These Times Were Computed

The full moon is the instant the Moon stands 180 degrees from the Sun, which is also the instant the Purnima tithi ends. Sunset and moonrise come from the JPL DE421 ephemeris by the method behind the site’s panchang. Before it wrote a single evening, the generator reproduced to the minute all 433 New Delhi sunsets from late October 2026 to December 2027, all 15 full moons in that stretch, the start and end of all 14 Purnimas from November 2026, and 48 moonrises the site had already published for festival nights. Moonrise is the moment the upper edge of the Moon’s disc clears the refracted horizon, the usual almanac convention. The lit figure is the share of the disc in sunlight as seen from the Earth’s centre.

Two things are left out. Whether the Moon is seen at rise depends on cloud, haze, buildings and hills to the east, and no table holds those. Nor does this page say on which evening a Purnima fast is kept: that turns on each observance’s own rule, and the Purnima 2027 list sets out the sunrise day and the vrat evening for each month.

Full Moon Evenings, November 2026 to December 2027, New Delhi

Each full moon has two evenings in the table: the last sunset before the full moon and the first sunset after it. In four months, Kartik Purnima 2026, Ashadha Purnima 2027, Ashwin Purnima 2027 and Margashirsha Purnima 2027, the Purnima begins before midnight of the evening before that, so that evening is listed too. Where a festival row of the site’s calendar belongs to that Purnima under another name, it is noted under the month with its date.

The Last Evening Before the Full Moon: Already Up at Sunset

On the last sunset before each of the 14 full moons, the Moon rises first. It is never far ahead: at least 2 and at most 79 minutes before sunset. The closest is 18 July 2027, the Guru Purnima day of 2027, when the Moon rises at 19:17 and the Sun sets at 19:19, with the full moon still about two hours away. The furthest is 21 January 2027, 79 minutes ahead.

The point of the sky opposite the Sun rises as the Sun sets. A Moon short of full lies a little behind that point, so it clears the eastern horizon a little before the Sun leaves the western one. The Purnima is current at that sunset in every month but one. For Paush Purnima 2027, the tithi begins at 21:30 on 21 January 2027, after that evening’s sunset, so Shukla Chaturdashi is still running when the Moon rises at 16:31.

Twice in the window the Purnima itself begins between moonrise and sunset. On 21 March 2027, Holika Dahan, the Moon rises at 17:34 in Shukla Chaturdashi, the Purnima begins at 18:22, and the Sun sets at 18:32. The Holashtak 2027 page gives the eight days that end that evening. The same happens on 17 July 2027, the evening before Guru Purnima.

The First Evening After: Within Minutes of Sunset

By the next sunset the Moon has passed the opposite point, and it rises around the time the Sun sets, from 5 minutes before to 40 minutes after. In three months it still comes up a few minutes before sunset: 22 January 2027 (Paush Purnima), 17 August 2027 (Shravan Purnima) and 14 November 2027 (Kartik Purnima). In those three the full moon falls in the daytime, hours or minutes before that sunset, and the Moon’s position north or south of the Sun’s path, together with the horizon convention that times both bodies by the upper edge of the disc, is enough to bring it up first.

The Paush Purnima of 2027 is the most exact of them. The full moon falls at 17:47 on 22 January 2027, the festival day itself, and the Moon rises at 17:46, one minute earlier, in the last minute of the Purnima, with the Sun setting at 17:51. No other moonrise in the table comes as close to its full moon. In the north Indian count from full moon to full moon, the month of Magh begins once this Purnima ends; the Magh month 2027 page gives its first and last days.

Across all 14 months, the disc is at least 98.2% lit at moonrise on both the last evening before the full moon and the first evening after it. What separates them is the clock: on the first the Moon is in the sky at dusk, on the second it arrives around dusk. Kartik Purnima 2026 shows how quickly the tithi moves on. On 25 November 2026 the Krishna Pratipada that began at the full moon ends at 16:50, before the 17:24 sunset, so Krishna Dwitiya is current when the Moon comes up.

Sharad Purnima 2027, on the Evening Before

In 2027 the tithi begins at 18:49 on 14 October 2027 and runs until the full moon at 19:17 the next evening. The site’s festival table, which takes the night that has the Purnima at nishita, the middle of the night, puts Sharad Purnima on 14 October 2027. That is the earliest of the three evenings for that month in the table. The Moon rises at 16:57, while it is still Shukla Chaturdashi, 56 minutes before sunset, and the Purnima begins after sunset. That moonrise, and the eleven other city times for the night, match the ones already published on the Sharad Purnima 2027 page.

Why the Full Moon Rises 28 Minutes Later in One Month and 75 in Another

Comparing the two main evenings of each month shows how much later the Moon rises from one day to the next. Across the window the figure runs from 28 minutes, between 15 September and 16 September 2027, to 75 minutes, between 21 January and 22 January 2027. The three shortest are the full moons of September 2027, August 2027 and October 2027; the three longest are those of January 2027, December 2026 and February 2027.

The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day along a path close to the Sun’s. How many minutes of rising time that costs depends on the angle at which that path meets the eastern horizon at dusk. Near the September equinox the angle is shallow, so a day’s motion carries the full Moon only a little further below the horizon and it rises only a little later. That is the effect known in English as the harvest moon. Near the March equinox the path stands steep at dusk and the same day’s motion costs more time. Two things that change from month to month move the figure as well, the Moon’s distance north or south of the Sun’s path and its changing speed along its orbit, and in this window they put the longest gaps in December to February rather than in March. The Chandra Darshan page shows the same geometry in the western sky, where it lets the young crescent stay up longest in spring.

Twelve Cities, the Next Three Full Moons

Moonrise clock times move with longitude: on each of these evenings moonrise is earliest in Kolkata and latest in Mumbai, a little over seventy minutes apart. Against each city’s own sunset the spread is much smaller, 10, 11 and 5 minutes on the three evenings. In November and December the Moon comes up furthest ahead of sunset in Chandigarh, the northernmost of the twelve, and least far ahead in Bangalore (Chennai and Bangalore, tied, on 24 November). Every city here is reckoned at sea level, which is why Delhi’s line may sit a minute off the New Delhi table, where the site’s elevation for the capital is used.
