Sankashti Chaturthi 2027 List: Moonrise Dates and Angarki
Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji
Sankashti Chaturthi is the Ganesha fast of the fourth lunar day after the full moon, kept every month and ended in the evening once the Moon has risen. Three remain in 2026, the first of them Karva Chauth on Thursday 29 October, and twelve fall in 2027. For thirteen of these fifteen, one evening has the Chaturthi running at the Delhi moonrise. In February no evening does and in May two do, while in December 2026 the eastern cities see the Moon before the tithi begins; each case is set out below.
Why Moonrise Decides the Day (संकष्टी चतुर्थी)
Households keeping the vrat fast through the day and break it after sighting the Moon and offering it water, so vrat calendars ask a narrower question than “which morning wakes to Chaturthi”: on which evening is the Chaturthi still running when the Moon comes up? This page answers that with each month’s New Delhi moonrise. On the waning fourth day the Delhi Moon rises between 1 hour 27 minutes and 3 hours 35 minutes after sunset in this list, late enough that a tithi which began in the morning can be over by then, and that is the whole reason this list and a sunrise list sometimes part.
The tithi instants and the moonrise times come from the JPL DE421 ephemeris, by the same method that produced the site’s Karva Chauth and Sharad Purnima moonrise tables; before this list was generated, that method reproduced all 58 moonrise and tithi times already published in those tables to the minute. Moonrise here is the centre of the Moon’s disc on the horizon. Almanacs that use the upper edge print a minute or two earlier.

A waning-fortnight day carries two month names. North Indian calendars count the month from full moon to full moon and give the first name; the amanta reckoning used in Maharashtra, Gujarat and the south counts from new moon and gives the second, which is why the same Sankashti can be “Magha” in one almanac and “Pausha” in another. The names come from the festival rows that share each lunation, and 2027 has no added month to shift them. The Chaturthi begins and ends at one instant across India; the moonrise does not, and the panchang calculator gives your own.
Moonrise in Twelve Cities for the Rest of 2026
India keeps one clock from Gujarat to Bengal and beyond, so the Moon is up in Kolkata and Patna well before Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The times below are for each city’s coordinates, on the evening listed above; in December the three earliest, Kolkata, Lucknow and Patna, see it before the tithi opens, as the next section explains.
| City | 29 October | 27 November | 26 December |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delhi | 20:12 | 20:13 | 20:14 |
| Mumbai | 20:56 | 20:54 | 20:48 |

| Bangalore | 20:51 | 20:47 | 20:37 |
| Hyderabad | 20:36 | 20:34 | 20:27 |
| Pune | 20:53 | 20:51 | 20:45 |
| Ahmedabad | 20:47 | 20:46 | 20:43 |

December 2026: Nine Minutes in Delhi, None in the East
The Pausha Sankashti opens at 20:05 on 26 December, and the Delhi Moon rises at 20:14, only 9 minutes later. Every other month of the list has at least 1 hour 16 minutes between the Delhi moonrise and the nearer edge of the tithi, so this is the one evening where the minute matters. Further east the Moon is already up when the tithi begins: Kolkata 19:38, Lucknow 20:01 and Patna 19:46. In those three cities neither evening has Chaturthi at moonrise, because the next night’s Moon, at 21:23 in Delhi, comes after the tithi ends at 17:13 on 27 December. A calendar that falls back on the sunrise day, as this page does for February, would print Sunday 27 December for them; elsewhere, up to Mumbai at 20:48, the moonrise test gives Saturday 26 December. A family east of Delhi should check its own almanac for this month.
February: A Moonrise on Neither Evening
The Phalguna Chaturthi opens at 21:49 on 23 February, 52 minutes after that evening’s Delhi moonrise at 20:57, and ends at 20:40 on 24 February, 79 minutes before the next moonrise at 21:59. It slips between two risings, and the site’s twelve moonrise cities all show the same gap. With no evening to choose, this page follows the rule the site’s festival tables use for Sakat Chauth and Karva Chauth, the tithi at sunrise, which gives Wednesday 24 February 2027. Other calendars may resolve a month like this differently, and this page does not rule between them.
May: A Moonrise on Both Evenings
The opposite happens in May. The Jyeshtha Chaturthi runs from 20:42 on 23 May to 22:59 on 24 May, more than a full day, and the Moon rises inside it on both evenings: 21:58 on Sunday the 23rd and 22:41 on Monday the 24th, with 18 minutes of the tithi still to run at the second. Every one of the twelve cities has both. The 24th also holds the sunrise. Printed calendars settle a case like this by their own conventions, so the entry is 23 May or 24 May.
Karva Chauth 2027 and the Moonrise Reading
Karva Chauth is the Kartika Sankashti, and the site’s festival table dates it by the tithi at sunrise. In 2026 that makes no difference: the row gives Thursday 29 October, and the Moon rises there at 20:12, inside the Chaturthi. The 2027 Karva Chauth row gives Tuesday 19 October, the morning that wakes to Chaturthi. But the tithi ends at 16:42 on 19 October, and that evening’s moonrise is 20:24, by which time Panchami has begun. On Monday 18 October the Chaturthi opens at 17:52 and the Moon rises at 19:30, inside it, in all twelve cities. So the moonrise reading puts the 2027 Sankashti on the 18th, and calendars that date Karva Chauth itself by moonrise will print the 18th too. This list shows the moonrise day; it does not overrule the festival row, which states its own rule.
The 2027 Sakat Chauth has no such split. Its Chaturthi opens at 08:10 on 25 January, after sunrise, and ends before the next dawn at 06:00 on 26 January, so no sunrise holds it at all; the table still gives Monday 25 January, and the Moon rises inside the tithi that evening at 21:12.
When the Wall Calendar Shows Another Day
A printed calendar normally marks the tithi current at sunrise. When the Chaturthi opens in the course of a day, the evening of that day has it at moonrise and the next morning has it at dawn. In 2027 that happens on 25 March (calendar: 26 March), 22 June (calendar: 23 June), 20 August (calendar: 21 August), 19 September (calendar: 20 September) and 16 December (calendar: 17 December), as well as at Karva Chauth. A calendar that marks the vrat rather than the tithi should agree with the first column. Twice the Chaturthi holds no New Delhi sunrise at all, on 27 November 2026 and 25 January 2027, and in July it holds two, the 22nd and the 23rd; in all three the moonrise evening is the first day.
Angarki Chaturthi on a Tuesday
When a Sankashti falls on a Tuesday, Maharashtrian custom calls it Angarki (or Angaraki), after Angaraka, a name of Mars, whose weekday is Tuesday, and keeps it with particular attention. Among the settled days of the list there is one: Tuesday 22 June 2027, the Ashadha Sankashti, with the Moon rising at 21:52 in Delhi. The weekday is a coincidence of the calendar and the page attaches no particular result to it. Neither the February nor the May candidate days fall on a Tuesday, so no reading of the unsettled months adds another.
Moonrise Drifts Through the Year
The Delhi moonrise on these evenings is not fixed. It comes latest in April, at 22:26, and earliest at Karva Chauth in October, at 19:30, a spread of 2 hours 56 minutes. Anyone breaking the fast should take the time for the evening and the city, not a figure remembered from another month.
