Sawan 2027: Start and End Dates, Somvar List

Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji

Sawan 2027 at a Glance (श्रावण मास)

Sawan, also written Shravan or Shravana, has two sets of dates in 2027, and the question “Sawan kab se hai” has a different answer depending on which calendar the household follows. In the north Indian purnimanta reckoning, where a month runs from the day after one full moon to the next full moon, Sawan begins on Monday 19 July, the morning after Guru Purnima, and ends on Tuesday 17 August, Raksha Bandhan. In the amanta reckoning, which counts from new moon to new moon and is the one printed in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Shravan begins on Tuesday 3 August and its last morning is Tuesday 31 August. A Marathi or Gujarati Shravan therefore starts 15 days after a Hindi-belt Sawan does.

That fortnight’s offset is the whole reason the Somvar lists disagree. North Indian Sawan holds five Mondays (19 July, 26 July, 2 August, 9 August and 16 August); amanta Shravan holds four (9 August, 16 August, 23 August and 30 August). Only 9 August and 16 August are a Shravan Somvar in both calendars.

The Two Full Moons and Two New Moons That Fix the Dates

Each edge of the month is an instant in the site’s DE421 lunation table, and a civil day belongs to whichever tithi is current at its sunrise. Times are IST; the sunrise and tithi columns are for New Delhi.

Amanta Shravan closesnew moon, 31 August 23:11Tue 31 August, 05:58Amavasya

Guru Purnima’s full moon comes at 21:14 on Sunday 18 July, in the evening, so that whole day is the Purnima of Ashadha and the next sunrise, 19 July, is the first of the north’s Sawan. The new moon of 2 August falls at 15:35, after midday, which leaves Monday 2 August as the Amavasya closing amanta Ashadha and makes 3 August the first amanta Shravan morning. At the other end, the full moon arrives at 12:58 on 17 August: Raksha Bandhan’s morning is still Purnima and is the last day of north Indian Sawan, and 18 August already belongs to Bhadrapada there. The closing new moon is late on 31 August, at 23:11, so that morning is the Amavasya and amanta Bhadrapada opens on 1 September.

None of these edges is close. On each of the eight mornings around them (18 July, 19 July, 2 August, 3 August, 17 August, 18 August, 31 August and 1 September) every one of the 38 cities in the site’s panchang list sits on the same tithi as New Delhi, at least two hours from the nearest tithi change. A Gujarati or Marathi calendar printed for Ahmedabad, Surat, Mumbai or Pune gets the same 3 August and 31 August as one printed for Delhi in amanta form.

How Long Is Shravan Month in 2027?

Measured from lunation to lunation, the north’s Sawan lasts 29 days, 15 hours and 44 minutes and the amanta Shravan 29 days, 7 hours and 36 minutes. Counted in sunrises, which is how a calendar prints it, the north Indian month has 30 days and the amanta month 29. The two share the bright fortnight, 3 August to 17 August, 15 days long; the north’s dark half, 19 July to 2 August, is still Ashadha in an amanta almanac, and the amanta dark half, 18 August to 31 August, is already Bhadrapada in the north.

Each month still has thirty tithis; they just do not line up one to a sunrise. In New Delhi’s daily table the north’s Sawan has the Krishna Chaturthi at two sunrises (22 July and 23 July) and the Shukla Trayodashi at two (14 August and 15 August), while the Krishna Ekadashi and the Shukla Tritiya hold none: two doubled, two dropped, thirty days. The amanta month shares the bright half’s doubled Trayodashi and dropped Tritiya, and in its own dark half drops the Krishna Chaturdashi, which opens at 06:13 on 30 August and is over by 02:41 on 31 August: one doubled, two dropped, 29 days.

That ledger is the most fragile thing on this page. Three of the four mornings that make it fall within half an hour of a tithi change even at New Delhi, and the lunar code that supplies these instants differs from the generated tables by at most 1 minute across 86 festival rows. The table gives each sunrise against the instant that decides it:

City30 July sunrise vs Krishna Ekadashi ends 05:135 August sunrise vs Shukla Tritiya ends 05:0914 August sunrise vs Shukla Trayodashi begins 05:2130 August sunrise vs Krishna Chaturdashi begins 06:13

Bangalore51 minutes after56 minutes after46 minutes after5 minutes before
Ahmedabad56 minutes after62 minutes after54 minutes after8 minutes after
Mumbai61 minutes after67 minutes after58 minutes after10 minutes after

The last column matters most. The Krishna Chaturdashi of amanta Shravan opens at 06:13 on 30 August, within half an hour of sunrise in 31 of the 38 cities. Across most of the list, New Delhi included, it opens after the Sun is up, so the morning is still Trayodashi and the Chaturdashi is the tithi the month drops. In ten cities on the western and south-western side (Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Surat, Kochi, Nashik, Jodhpur, Thiruvananthapuram, Goa and Udaipur) sunrise comes ten minutes or less after it opens, the morning counts as Chaturdashi, and the tithi that no sunrise touches is the Trayodashi instead. The month is 29 days long either way; which tithi is the missing one is for a local almanac to settle. Your own town’s sunrise tithi is on the panchang calculator.

Sawan Somvar 2027: The Mondays in Each Calendar

Because every edge holds in every listed city, the Monday count is plain weekday arithmetic over each span and does not move with the town. The seven Mondays from 19 July to 30 August sort like this:

30 August 2027Krishna TrayodashiBhadrapadaShravanaThe Krishna Chaturdashi opens at 06:13; Masik Shivratri night

For a north Indian household the first Sawan Somvar is the first day of the month itself, 19 July, a Krishna Pratipada. The third, 2 August, is an Amavasya, the day of the new moon that ends amanta Ashadha. The fifth and last is 16 August, the eve of Raksha Bandhan, on which the Purnima itself opens at 10:29. Searches for “Shravan Somvar 2027” from Maharashtra or Gujarat want the other list: 9 August, 16 August, 23 August and 30 August. Its last Monday, 30 August, is also the night of amanta Shravan’s Krishna Chaturdashi, covered below. The puja, the rules households keep and the Solah Somvar custom are on the Somvar vrat page; this page lists the dates only and does not say what the fasts achieve.

Sawan Shivratri 2027

The site dates every monthly Shivratri the way its festival generator dates Maha Shivratri: the night is the first civil day on which the Krishna Chaturdashi is running at 23:58 IST. Applied to the north’s Sawan, that gives Saturday 31 July. The Chaturdashi opens at 22:58 that night, 60 minutes ahead of the 23:58 test, and ends at 19:20 on 1 August, before the next night’s test; the 31 July morning itself dawns on the Krishna Trayodashi. Because the test is one IST instant, the date is the same in every city. In an amanta almanac the same fortnight is the dark half of Ashadha, so a calendar printed in Pune or Ahmedabad files this night under Ashadha.

Inside amanta Shravan the corresponding night is Monday 30 August: the Chaturdashi opens at 06:13 that morning and is still running more than two hours after the 23:58 test, ending at 02:41 on 31 August. It falls on a Somvar, and in the north it is already Bhadrapada’s. The Masik Shivratri 2027 list carries both nights with their month names in each reckoning, along with the Pradosh Vrat that shares 31 July.

Hariyali Teej, Nag Panchami and Raksha Bandhan in Each Version

The timeline puts the month’s dated rows in order. Clock times appear only for instants the site’s tables carry, and the two right-hand columns give the month each calendar assigns to that date’s New Delhi sunrise.

The three Shravan festivals all sit in the bright fortnight, so both calendars date them alike. Hariyali Teej is the Shukla Tritiya, and in 2027 that is one of the tithis no New Delhi sunrise touches: it runs from 08:20 on 4 August to 05:09 on 5 August, opening after one dawn and closing before the next. The festival generator’s convention for such a tithi is to keep it on the day it begins, which is why the festival table puts Hariyali Teej on Wednesday 4 August, a morning that dawns on the Shukla Dwitiya. The reading changes in the east. In Guwahati the 5 August sunrise comes 19 minutes before the Tritiya ends, in Kolkata the two coincide to the minute, and in nine more cities the Tritiya has ended less than half an hour before sunrise. Where a sunrise catches the Tritiya, an almanac working by the sunrise rule may print 5 August; this page does not choose between the two.

Nag Panchami raises no such question. The Panchami opens at 02:27 on 6 August and holds that morning’s sunrise in every listed city, so Friday 6 August is the date everywhere. Raksha Bandhan is the festival table’s Tuesday 17 August. Its Purnima opens at 10:29 on the Monday, after that morning’s sunrise, and runs to the full moon at 12:58 on 17 August; only the 17 August dawn is Purnima, in every city on the list. The naming scheme the Purnima 2027 list follows pairs the month with Shravana nakshatra; in 2027 the Moon is in Shravana at the 16 August sunrise and has moved into Dhanishta by the 17 August one, where the lunation table also puts the full moon.

The Ekadashis split the way the Mondays do. Kamika, the Krishna Ekadashi of the north’s Sawan, runs from 07:34 on 29 July to 05:13 on 30 July and holds no New Delhi sunrise, which is why the Ekadashi 2027 list prints it with two candidate dates and files it under Ashadha, its amanta month. Shravana Putrada on Thursday 12 August is in both calendars. Aja on Saturday 28 August is in amanta Shravan only and is Bhadrapada’s in the north. Krishna Janmashtami belongs to the same amanta-only stretch: the festival rules file it as Shravana’s dark-half Ashtami, read at midnight, and the festival table puts it on Tuesday 24 August, when the Ashtami opens at 20:25. A purnimanta almanac calls the same night Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami. The rules’ own note says it: north Indian sources name dark-fortnight festivals by the month one ahead.

Chaturmas and the Sun in Cancer

Both versions of Shravan sit wholly inside Chaturmas. The site’s 2027 closure table runs it from Wednesday 14 July, Devshayani Ekadashi, four days before Guru Purnima, to Wednesday 10 November, Dev Uthani Ekadashi, 120 days counting both ends. The muhurat engine closes marriage dates for all of it, so neither Shravan offers a wedding date on this site; the Chaturmas 2027 page has the four months in full.

The Sun reaches sidereal Cancer at 05:42 IST on Saturday 17 July, the day before Guru Purnima, and moves on into Leo at 14:07 IST on Tuesday 17 August, 69 minutes after the full moon that ends the north’s Sawan. Every sunrise of north Indian Sawan therefore has the Sun in Cancer. Amanta Shravan opens with the Sun in Cancer at the 2 August new moon, which is what names it Shravana under the convention the Amavasya 2027 list uses, and the Leo ingress is the only one between its two new moons; the site’s panchang data would mark a lunation with no ingress as adhika, and 2027 has none. These are instants only. The civil day on which a regional calendar observes either ingress is left to that calendar.

What This Page Leaves Out, and Where to Go Next

Kanwar Yatra has no start or end rule in the site’s tables, so no Kanwar dates appear here; nor is there any claim about the results of a Somvar fast or a Sawan observance. The month before is on the Ashadha month 2027 page and the month after on the Bhadrapada month 2027 page. The day-by-day observances are on the July 2027 and August 2027 vrat and festival lists, the whole year on the 2027 festival calendar, and each dated festival has its own page under festivals. In Hindi: सावन 2027: आरंभ और समाप्ति की तारीखें, सोमवार सूची.
