Mitra Tara (8) in Guna Milan

Tara counts the nakshatras from one birth star to the other, inclusively, and reduces the count to one of nine; Mitra is the 8th, so a star 8th, 17th or 26th from another sits at Mitra from it. The koota counts both ways, bride to groom and groom to bride, and the two counts are not independent: when the groom’s star is at Mitra from the bride’s, the bride’s is always at Vipat (3) from the groom’s, because both counts are the same distance read from opposite ends.

Mitra is not one of the three inauspicious counts, the 3rd, 5th and 7th, and Vipat, its reverse, is one, so every pairing with Mitra counted from the bride scores exactly 1.5 of the Tara koota’s 3 — all 1,296 of them. One inauspicious count is the most a Mitra pairing carries, since its partner count is Vipat, and because no two inauspicious counts ever pair, Tara never scores nothing.

Whether the groom's star sits at Mitra from the bride's is fixed by the two birth stars; the full match needs both Moon positions. The Free Kundli Matching tool gives the eight koota scores and the total, which is the headline answer; the Kundali Milan detailed report works the same arithmetic further from your own birth details, and its page lists what it contains.

The other taras: Janma, Sampat, Vipat, Kshema, Pratyari, Sadhaka, Vadha and Ati-Mitra. Mitra in the context of the whole koota is on the Tara page; the method in the 36 gunas explained. In Hindi: मित्र तारा.
