Saturn in Ashwini Nakshatra (Shani in अश्विनी)

Ashwini, the 1st of the 27 nakshatras, covers 0°00′ – 13°20′ of the sidereal zodiac, wholly inside Aries. Ashwini is ruled by Ketu, so Saturn in Ashwini stands in Ketu’s star.

Ketu’s row in the friendship lists counts Saturn a friend; Saturn’s own row names no node, so Saturn’s view of the lord of Ashwini has no entry, and this page does not supply one. The other two nakshatras Ketu rules, Magha and Mula, put Saturn under the same star lord.

Saturn in Ashwini, Pada by Pada

By rashi, Saturn is debilitated in all four padas of Ashwini, because the whole nakshatra lies in Aries. By navamsa the four padas fall in Aries, Taurus, Gemini and Cancer. Saturn’s strongest navamsas in Ashwini are padas 2 (Taurus, in a friend's sign) and 3 (Gemini, in a friend's sign), and its weakest is pada 1 (Aries, debilitated).

Ashwini pada 1 is vargottama — Aries in rashi and in navamsa — so Saturn there is debilitated on both counts. Of the 108 padas only twelve are vargottama, one for each sign.

Ashwini pada 1 (Aries 0°00′ – 3°20′) is gandanta: one of the six padas on the junction of a water sign and the fire sign after it, and Saturn placed in that quarter of Ashwini sits on the junction itself.

• 3 June 2027: Saturn enters Ashwini, and leaves on 20 October 2027 moving backwards — 139 days.
• 23 February 2028: Saturn enters Ashwini, and leaves on 16 June 2028 — 114 days.
• 2 November 2028: Saturn enters Ashwini while retrograde, backing in from the next nakshatra, and is still there when the table closes on 1 January 2029.
