Anshik Manglik: What Partial Mangal Dosha Means, Counted

Published 2026-10-27 | Live Pandit Ji

Anshik (आंशिक) is the Hindi word for partial. In matchmaking it gets attached to a chart that passes some of the Mangal Dosha tests and not others. One family’s pandit calls a chart anshik manglik because Mars is in a dosha house counted from the Moon but not from the lagna. Another uses the word because Mars is in a dosha house with a cancellation present. A third uses it for a placement on a longer list of houses that a shorter list leaves out. There is no single agreed definition. So when a report or a biodata says anshik, the useful question is which test the chart failed and which it passed.

This page sets out the tests, then counts how often each combination of them comes up in the sky, so a family can see whether a partial result is the unusual case or the ordinary one.

Five Houses, Three Starting Points

The check on this site, the same one the Mangal Dosha calculator runs, asks whether Mars sits in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. It asks that three times, counting the houses whole-sign from three different points: the lagna, the Moon (Chandra lagna) and Venus. Each count is a plain yes or no. Three yes-or-no answers give eight possible combinations, and only two of them are unambiguous: yes on all three, which every tradition counted here would call Manglik, and no on all three, which none would. The other six are the territory the word anshik is used for.

How Often Each Combination Comes Up

The table below samples the sky at Delhi once every 97 minutes from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2028, 16,272 instants in all, and runs the three tests on each. It describes the sky, not a set of real births, but it is the sky every birth in those years was drawn from.

yesnoyes11.4%
yesnono13%
noyesyes11.2%
noyesno12.9%
nonoyes15.9%
nonono18.5%

Three things stand out. Mars is in a dosha house on at least one of the three counts in 81.5% of the instants, roughly four out of five, and on all three in only 8%. The six mixed rows together hold 73.6%, more than the two clear-cut rows combined. And 40.1% of instants are clear from the lagna but flagged from the Moon or Venus or both, which is the situation behind the familiar “the software says Manglik, but only from the Moon”. Put plainly, a partial result is the ordinary outcome of running three tests, not a rare in-between condition.

Why the Lagna Count Holds Steady and the Venus Count Does Not

YearFrom the lagnaFrom the MoonFrom VenusNone of the threeAll three

202741.3%40.8%36.8%22.3%6.5%
202841.6%41.5%71.3%10%12.4%

The lagna column barely moves, and each year sits close to five in twelve, or 41.7%. The lagna runs through all twelve signs every day, so Mars spends about five-twelfths of every day in one of the five houses counted from it, whatever sign Mars is in. The Moon goes round the zodiac in about a month, which also evens out over a year. Venus does not even out the same way. The angle between Mars and Venus does not run evenly through all twelve signs within a year; it drifts with each planet’s own cycle round the Sun, so the Venus count swings by 40.0 points between these three years against 0.3 for the lagna. The share of instants that are Manglik on all three counts ranges from 5% to 12.4%, more than double. So two people born in different years can carry the same “from Venus” flag for very different reasons, and the year of birth alone shifts how common a full result is.

Among instants that are Manglik from the lagna, the five houses take close to a fifth each: the 1st 20.5%, the 4th 19.4%, the 7th 19.3%, the 8th 20.2%, the 12th 20.7%. No one house dominates the count, though some pandits weigh the houses differently, as the Manglik dosh guide sets out.

The Six-House List

Some printed lists add the 2nd house, which makes six. On that list, Mars is in a dosha house from the lagna in 50% of the instants, all three counts are clear in 12.1% of them, against 18.5% on the five-house list, and all three are flagged in 13.8%. Mars in the 2nd is one route to an anshik label, because that chart is Manglik on one list and not on the other. If a report says Manglik and the calculator here says not, check which list each one used before anything else.

Cancellations Present on a Lagna-Manglik Chart

The second common meaning of anshik is “Manglik, but cancelled in part”. The calculator tests three cancellations that a single chart can show: Mars in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or exalted in Capricorn; Jupiter in the same sign as Mars or aspecting it by whole-sign drishti; and Saturn in one of the five houses from the lagna, a condition some traditions read as cancelling. Among the instants that are Manglik from the lagna, Mars is in its own or exaltation sign in 18.2%, Jupiter is with it or aspecting it in 31.1%, and Saturn is in one of the five houses in 42.1%. At least one of the three is present in 65.7% across the three years, and in 77.6% of 2026, 66.4% of 2027 and 53.3% of 2028.

Two cautions. A cancellation present is not the same as a cancellation accepted: pandits disagree about which conditions cancel fully, which only reduce, and whether Saturn’s placement counts at all. And the best-known cancellation, both partners carrying the dosha, cannot be seen in one chart. It needs the second chart, which is where kundli matching comes in, although the 36-point Guna Milan score itself does not test for Mangal Dosha.

“Can an Anshik Manglik Marry a Non-Manglik?”

This is the question the word usually arrives with, and this page cannot answer it, because the answer depends on which partial result is meant and on how the family’s astrologer weighs it. What the counts above can do is make the conversation precise. Ask for the house Mars occupies from the lagna, the Moon and Venus, which house list was used, and which cancellations were checked. Two charts described as anshik can differ in all three. The houses one by one, and the wider list of cancellations, are covered in the Manglik dosh guide; how the other chart-based yogas compare for frequency is in how common each kundli yoga is.

What This Page Does Not Say

It counts and stops there. It does not grade one combination as heavier than another, say what a combination means for a marriage or a spouse, offer a remedy, or suggest that a partial result settles a proposal either way. The percentages are shares of sampled sky at one city, not a survey of real people, and a pandit reading a real chart works with degrees and aspects this whole-sign count leaves out.

In Brief

  • Anshik means partial: Manglik on some tests and not others, with no single agreed definition
  • The tests: Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, counted from the lagna, the Moon and Venus
  • How common: at least one count in 81.5% of sampled instants, all three in 8%, a mixed result in 73.6%
  • What to ask: which starting point, which house list, and which cancellations were checked

See Where Mars Sits in Both Charts

The free Mangal Dosha calculator gives the house of Mars from all three starting points for one birth. The Kundali Milan report sets out Venus and Mars in both partners’ charts, with sign, house, nakshatra and dignity, as facts. It gives no Mangal Dosha verdict, so what counts as partial stays a question for the families and their astrologer.
