January 2027 Vrat and Festival List: Every Date

Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji

January 2027 is split by one solar event. Until the Sun enters Capricorn on 14 January, the month is inside Kharmas, and after it the custom that defers weddings and other beginnings lifts. The lunar side of the month covers both halves of Pausha as north Indian calendars count them and the first days of Magha, with two Ekadashis, two Pradosh evenings, Paush Amavasya, Paush Purnima and Sakat Chauth. All 11 entries are below, each with the reading that settles its day.

29 JanuaryFridayKalashtamiKrishna Ashtami at night.

Each date is read for New Delhi from the site’s generated panchang (NASA JPL DE421 ephemeris, Lahiri ayanamsa). The tithi instants hold for all of India; a rule that tests sunrise, sunset or moonrise is tested against New Delhi’s, and another city’s almanac tests its own. The panchang calculator gives those times for any place.

What the Table Leaves Out: The Sankranti Festivals

Lohri, Pongal, Uttarayan and Magh Bihu are tied to the Sun’s entry into Capricorn rather than to a tithi, and this site does not print a Sankranti observance day, so they are not rows in the table. What it does print is the instant: the Sun crosses into sidereal Capricorn at 21:05 on Thursday 14 January, after New Delhi’s 17:45 sunset. A crossing after dark is the case the Makar Sankranti 2027 page works through, since the custom ties the punya kaal to daylight. The same instant ends the Dhanu Kharmas that began on 16 December 2026.

Inside Kharmas: Saphala Ekadashi to Paush Amavasya

Saphala Ekadashi on Sunday 3 January is the year’s first, and the Saphala page explains why 2027 has two of them and 2026 none. Two days later comes the busiest date of the month for Shiva’s fasts. The Krishna Trayodashi opens at 18:16 on 4 January, into that evening’s pradosh span, but fills the whole span only on Tuesday 5 January, which makes it a Bhaum Pradosh Vrat. It ends at 20:40 that night and the Chaturdashi that follows holds midnight, so the same Tuesday is Masik Shivratri.

Paush Amavasya is Thursday 7 January. Amanta calendars, which close the month at the new moon, call it Margashirsha Amavasya, and from the next day count Pausha. Kharmas ends a week later.

Panchak, Mars and the Second Week

Panchak runs from 04:34 on Monday 11 January, before that morning’s sunrise, to 23:50 on Friday 15 January, so the Vinayaka Chaturthi of 11 January falls on its first day and the Sun’s Capricorn entry on the evening before its last. On 10 January Mars turns retrograde in Leo, the start of the retrograde the Mars retrograde 2027 page follows into April, and Mercury enters Capricorn at 00:34 the same day. Masik Durgashtami is Saturday 16 January.

After Kharmas: Putrada Ekadashi to Paush Purnima

Pausha Putrada Ekadashi is Tuesday 19 January, though only just: the Ekadashi ends at 07:49, 35 minutes after New Delhi’s 07:14 sunrise. A city whose sun rises later than that end time has no Ekadashi sunrise on 19 January, and its calendar has to decide the date another way; the Putrada page goes through the parana. The Budh Pradosh Vrat follows on Wednesday 20 January.

Paush Purnima is Friday 22 January, the full moon that ends Pausha for purnimanta calendars, which open Magha on 23 January; the Paush month page sets out both systems. The Moon enters Pushya at 10:25 the same morning and leaves at 07:31 on 23 January. A Friday and a Saturday hold that passage, so January has no Guru Pushya and no Ravi Pushya.

Sakat Chauth and the Last Week

Sakat Chauth, the Sankashti Chaturthi of Magha in the north, is Monday 25 January. Its Krishna Chaturthi opens at 08:10, after that day’s sunrise, and closes at 06:00 on 26 January, before the next, so it holds no sunrise at all. The moonrise reading gives the same day without strain: New Delhi’s Moon rises at 21:12 on 25 January, well inside the tithi, and that is the moonrise the fast is broken at. In the early hours of the same date Jupiter, retrograde, moves back from Leo into Cancer at 02:15.

The month ends with Kalashtami on Friday 29 January, when Venus also enters Sagittarius at 18:37. Mercury moves into Aquarius at 03:30 on 28 January, and Venus had opened the month by entering Scorpio at 23:18 on 1 January.
