Shiv Vaas: How to Check It, Tithi Chart, Nov 2026–Dec 2027

Published 2026-10-28 | Live Pandit Ji

Shiv vaas (also written shivvas or shiv vas) is a check that Hindi puja manuals ask for before a Rudrabhishek: where, on the day of the rite, a short verse places Shiva. Only the tithi number goes into it, so the answer can be worked out months ahead. November 2026’s first span that the verse grades as chosen will open on 1 November at 14:52 IST with Krishna Ashtami (beside Gauri); Krishna Ekadashi will follow on 4 November and Krishna Dwadashi on 5 November. Below are the rule, the chart for all 30 tithis, the reasons the chart has the shape it has, and every chosen span to the end of 2027.

The Rule and the Three Verses

The first verse gives the arithmetic: तिथिं च द्विगुणी कृत्वा पुनः पञ्च समन्वितम् । सप्तभिस्तु हरेद्भागं शेषं शिववास उच्यते ॥ Take the tithi, double it, add five, divide by seven, and the remainder is called the shiv vaas. The tithi is numbered straight through the lunar month, Shukla Pratipada as 1 up to Purnima as 15, then Krishna Pratipada as 16 up to Amavasya as 30. For Shukla Panchami, 5 doubled plus five is 15, which leaves 1 after sevens are taken out; for Krishna Chaturdashi, 29 gives 63, which seven divides exactly, so the remainder is 0.

The second verse names a place for each remainder: 1 on Mount Kailash, 2 beside Gauri, 3 riding the bull Nandi, 4 in the assembly, 5 at a meal, 6 at play and 0 in the cremation ground. The third verse grades them. It treats the first three as places to choose for the rite and the other four as places to avoid, and it attaches a result to each. This page does not repeat those results. Some of them are suffering and death, and a line of verse about a tithi is not a forecast for any person who books a puja on it.

The verses are the ones Hindi puja manuals and panchang explanations quote whenever they set out shiv vaas. Those books do not say which text the lines come from, and so no source text is named here.

The Shiv Vaas Chart: All 30 Tithis

This is the table people mean by a “shiv vas chart”. Each row is the verse’s arithmetic, worked out; the last column is the third verse’s grade, nothing more.

Why the Chart Repeats

Two tithis seven apart always land on one place, because moving seven tithis on adds fourteen to the doubled figure, and fourteen leaves nothing over when divided by seven. Inside the bright fortnight that pairs the chosen tithis off: Shukla Dwitiya with Navami, Shukla Panchami with Dwadashi and Shukla Shashthi with Trayodashi. The dark fortnight then runs one step ahead of the bright one. Krishna Pratipada is the sixteenth tithi, and sixteen is two more than fourteen, so it shares the place of Shukla Dwitiya, and every Krishna tithi sits where the next Shukla tithi sits.

The upshot is that 13 of the 30 tithis are graded as chosen: in Shukla paksha the Dwitiya, Panchami, Shashthi, Navami, Dwadashi and Trayodashi, and in Krishna paksha the Pratipada, Chaturthi, Panchami, Ashtami, Ekadashi and Dwadashi, together with Amavasya. By place, the count is four on Mount Kailash, five beside Gauri and four riding the bull Nandi. Going round the month, never more than two tithis in a row are graded to avoid. The new Moon and the full Moon do not agree: Amavasya comes out beside Gauri, while Purnima comes out in the cremation ground. This is a separate test from the five tithi groups, and the two lists cut across each other.

Pradosh, Shivratri and the Exemptions

The arithmetic does not sort the days kept for Shiva the way a reader might expect. Shukla Trayodashi, the bright-fortnight Pradosh, comes out riding the bull Nandi and is chosen. Krishna Trayodashi, the other Pradosh of the month, comes out at a meal, so of the 29 Trayodashi spans between November 2026 and December 2027 only 14 pass. Krishna Chaturdashi, the tithi of every Masik Shivratri, comes out in the cremation ground all 15 times in the range, and that includes Maha Shivratri on 6 March 2027, whose Chaturdashi runs from 6 March, 12:04 to 7 March, 13:46. The Pradosh vrat list gives the 2027 evenings of both Trayodashis.

Several explanations of the rule list occasions on which the check is not needed: they exempt Maha Shivratri, the month of Shravan (the Sawan 2027 page has its dates by both calendars) and worship at a jyotirlinga. Some puja manuals go further and run the check only on the first day of a rite spread over several days, or only for rites in which Shiva is formally invoked (avahan), leaving a simple daily abhishek outside it. These positions differ from book to book, and this page does not choose between them; the tables below apply the verse as written, with no exemption.

Which Tithi Counts: The Hour of the Rite or Sunrise

The verse says only “the tithi”, and a tithi often changes in the middle of the morning. Where explanations written for priests take up the point, they use the tithi current at the hour the rite begins with its invocation, not the udaya tithi printed against the date, which is why the calendar below gives clock spans rather than dates. A reader who goes by the sunrise tithi instead will get a different list, and the gap is large. Over the 425 days from 1 November 2026 to 30 December 2027, with New Delhi’s sunrise and sunset, a chosen tithi holds at sunrise on 187 days and at some point between sunrise and sunset on 248; on 61 of those days it begins only after sunrise, and on the remaining 177 no chosen tithi touches the daylight hours at all. How sunrise names the day is set out on the kshaya and vriddhi tithi page.

How the Spans Were Computed

Each tithi edge comes from the site’s tables computed with the JPL DE421 ephemeris, given in IST. A tithi is an angle between the Sun and the Moon, so its edges fall at the same instant everywhere in India; the New Delhi sunrise enters only the sunrise counts above. Because tithis are unequal in length, the share of clock time is not quite the share of tithis: chosen spans cover 43.2% of the hours from November 2026 to December 2027, against 43.3% for 13 tithis out of 30. The shortest chosen span lasts 20 h 09 min (Krishna Pratipada, 24 December 2026) and the longest 26 h 43 min (Shukla Shashthi, 3 December 2027). In 57 places one chosen span hands straight over to the next, so the end time of one row is the start time of the next.

The longest stretch with no chosen tithi lasts 53 h 25 min, from 11:23 on 11 December 2026 to 16:48 on 13 December, during which Shukla Tritiya and Shukla Chaturthi run back to back.

What This Page Does Not Give

It gives no result for a puja on any of these spans; the arithmetic sorts tithis and has nothing to say about what follows a rite. It is not a full muhurat either, since lagna, nakshatra and Rahu Kaal are left out, and it is no reason to move a puja a family priest has already fixed for a date outside the tables.

In Brief

  • The rule: tithi count (1 to 30) doubled, plus five, divided by seven; the remainder names one of seven places
  • Chosen: 13 tithis, the remainders 1, 2 and 3
  • Pattern: places repeat every seven tithis, and Krishna paksha runs one tithi ahead of Shukla
  • Pradosh and Shivratri: Shukla Trayodashi is chosen; Krishna Trayodashi and every Krishna Chaturdashi are not, and the manuals’ exemptions differ
  • Timing: spans in IST, the same across India; sunrise reading gives 187 days of 425, any daylight hour 248

Planning a Rudrabhishek?

The Rudrabhishek page sets out the samagri and the order of the rite, from the panchamrit abhishek and Rudram chanting to bilva archana and aarti. When you book, you pick a date up to about 45 days ahead and a time slot, so a span from the tables above that falls inside that window can be the one you ask for.
