The twelve positions

Chandra Bala from Dhanu, all twelve rashis

The transiting Moon is always in one of the twelve, so a Sagittarius reading on any day is one of twelve situations. The house count is arithmetic — subtract your rashi from the Moon’s. The grouping into favourable, middling and avoided is the muhurta convention, and the last column is how many of the 730 days from 2026-01-01 to 2027-12-31 the Moon actually spent there at sunrise, counted rather than divided.

Six of the twelve houses are in the favourable group, so about half of all days must fall there, and they do: 366 of 730, or 50%. Saying so is the point rather than an admission. Chandra Bala is a filter that removes the 181 days you would not choose, and the field it leaves is far too wide to be a forecast — the actual selection is made on the tithi, on Tara Bala from the nakshatra, on the karana, and finally on the chart. A daily percentage built on this would be a coin flip in a suit.

Without the arithmetic

Spotting Dhanu's Chandrashtama in any panchang

A printed panchang gives you the nakshatra, not the rashi, so the shortcut everyone wants — glance at the almanac and know whether it is your Chandrashtama — needs one translation. For Dhanu the eighth rashi is Karka (Cancer), and Karka is covered by 3 nakshatras: Punarvasu, Pushya, Ashlesha. That is the whole conversion, with one complication: one of them is cut by the rashi boundary rather than sitting inside it.

So the practical rule for Dhanu is: Pushya or Ashlesha in the panchang means Chandrashtama outright, no further checking. Punarvasu is a maybe — a pada is 3°20′, so that nakshatra spans the boundary and only the listed quarters count. Most published panchangs give the pada or the Moon’s degree alongside the nakshatra, and either resolves it.

All of it depends on your Moon actually being in Dhanu, which is the one thing a newspaper column cannot know about you — and the one thing a free Kundli settles for good.

Every Dhanu Chandrashtama in 2026 and 2027

The Moon returns to Karka once a sidereal month, so over the 730 days from 2026-01-01 to 2027-12-31 this position comes round 27 times. Each row is the run of sunrises on which the Moon stood in Karka, taken straight from the same census the table above is built on — 24 of the 27 windows cover two sunrises and 3 cover three.

Read the tithi column downwards and it walks backwards through the lunar month. That is not drift in the data, it is the two months disagreeing: the Moon comes back to Karka every 27.32 days but the tithi cycle takes 29.53, so each window lands about two tithis earlier than the last and the whole thing comes round in roughly a year. Over the record Dhanu’s Chandrashtama coincided with an Ekadashi 4 times, with Purnima 2, and with Amavasya 2 — collisions worth knowing about, because those are the days most likely to already be in somebody’s calendar.

These are sunrises, not boundaries. The Moon enters and leaves Karka whenever it does, usually in the night at one end or the other, so a two-sunrise window is a stretch of a little over two days rather than exactly two, and a strict observance would start and end it from the ingress rather than from a sunrise.

The other half

Tara Bala, and why a Sagittarius page can only get you three quarters of the way

Muhurta does not check Chandra Bala on its own. It checks Chandra Bala and Tara Bala together, because the two count different things: Chandra Bala counts rashis from your natal Moon’s sign, Tara Bala counts nakshatras from your natal Moon’s star. Nine taras — Janma, Sampat, Vipat, Kshema, Pratyari, Sadhaka, Vadha, Mitra, Ati-Mitra — and since there are 27 nakshatras the cycle repeats three times, so every tara is held by three stars rather than one. Three of the nine are rejected across the board: Vipat (danger and loss; not chosen for beginnings or travel), Pratyari (obstruction; avoided where another party must consent), Vadha (harm; the heaviest of the three, rejected outright).

Here is the limit of what a page written for a rashi can do, stated plainly rather than papered over. Dhanu spans 3 nakshatras — Moola (all four padas), Purva Ashadha (all four padas), Uttara Ashadha (pada 1) — so a Sagittarius Moon sits in one of three possible janma nakshatras, and each gives a different tara wheel. Chandra Bala works from the rashi alone, which is why this page can compute it for you. Tara Bala cannot, so what follows is the wheel for each candidate. Find your janma nakshatra once — a free Kundli gives it with the pada — and one of these three columns is yours for life.

The three highlighted rows are the ones that change a decision. For a Moola Moon they come to the Moon standing in Uttara Ashadha, Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, Dhanishta, Mrigashira, Chitra, Purva Bhadrapada, Punarvasu, Vishakha — nine of the 27, so about a third of every month is out on this test alone, before Chandra Bala is even consulted. The other 2 columns hold the same nine rotated round the wheel, which is exactly why the janma nakshatra has to be right before any of it is worth using.

Put the two together and you have what a muhurta actually starts from: the Moon’s rashi counted from Dhanu, and the Moon’s nakshatra counted from your janma star. Six of the twelve houses pass the first test and six of the nine taras are not rejected by the second, so a day clearing both is roughly a one-in-three proposition — a real filter, and still nothing like a forecast. The tithi, the karana, the yoga and the ascendant at the hour in question all come after.

The Moon's pace

Why tomorrow's position is often today's, and sometimes not

The Moon crosses a rashi in about 2¼ days, which is the least convenient interval possible: long enough that consecutive days often share a position, short enough that you cannot assume they will. Counted over the record, the Moon changed rashi 319 times, and the stay was 2 sunrises on 231 of them and 3 sunrises on 88 of them — never fewer than 2 and never more than 3, averaging 2.28. So on roughly 44% of days tomorrow's Chandra Bala from Dhanu differs from today's, and on the rest it holds.

The stays are uneven for the same reason the day counts in the table above are: the Moon's orbit is an ellipse and it travels between about 11.8° and 15.3° a day. Near apogee it is slow and lingers; near perigee it is quick and passes through. Over these two years that put 68 sunrises in Makara against only 55 in Vrishabha, where an even division would give 60.8 each.

The lord

Where Jupiter stands, and why it barely moves

Dhanu is Jupiter’s rashi, so every Sagittarius reading is partly a reading of Jupiter. That is the half of the picture the Moon does not supply — and the half that makes “tomorrow” a smaller question than it sounds, because Jupiter holds a rashi for about one year and completes the zodiac in 11.86 years.

Those three do not change — they are the same in 2026 and in 2126, which is why they sit here as fixed background rather than as tomorrow’s news. The moving part is which rashi Jupiter is standing in, and at about one year per rashi that is a figure with a shelf life of weeks or years, not hours — so it is computed at build time and printed with its date, while the panchang and the Moon are resolved on your device. Different quantities, different treatment, and the date on each says which is which.

Method

How the Moon's rashi is worked out

The nakshatra is not enough to fix the rashi, which is the trap here. Nine of the 27 nakshatras straddle a 30° boundary, so on about a third of days knowing the nakshatra leaves the rashi genuinely undecided. The Moon's sidereal longitude is therefore computed directly, at each day's tabulated sunrise, using the same Lahiri ayanamsa the panchang was generated with.

That gives a free check on both calculations. The nakshatra implied by our own lunar series agrees with the independently generated table — computed from JPL DE421 through Skyfield — on 729 of the 730 days. The single disagreement falls 14 arcseconds from a nakshatra boundary, which is the expected size of the gap between a truncated Meeus series and DE421 rather than a fault in either. Fourteen arcseconds is about one twenty-thousandth of a nakshatra.

One consequence worth stating: the position above is read at sunrise, which is the convention a panchang follows, and the Moon does not wait for the next one. If it is already past 15° of a rashi at sunrise it will leave before the day is out, and the reading holds for the morning rather than the evening. Where that happens, the block above says so.
