Vara

The seven days, and which of them favour Vrishabha

A week in Jyotish is not an arbitrary seven-day block: each day belongs to one of the seven visible grahas. Vrishabha is owned by Venus, so Friday is its own day — and how Venus regards each of the other six lords under naisargika maitri, natural friendship, is what makes some days easier for this rashi than others. The relation runs in one direction only, which is why the table reads "how Venus regards" rather than simply "friend" or "enemy".

Sunday
Sun · enemy

Venus, the lord of Vrishabha, counts Sun a natural enemy. Traditionally avoided for new undertakings, though a good day for clearing an obstacle.

Monday
Moon · enemy

Venus, the lord of Vrishabha, counts Moon a natural enemy. Traditionally avoided for new undertakings, though a good day for clearing an obstacle.

Tuesday
Mars · neutral

Venus, the lord of Vrishabha, regards Mars as neither friend nor enemy. Judge the day by the matter rather than by the vara.

Wednesday
Mercury · friend

Mercury is a natural friend of Venus, which owns Vrishabha. Favourable for starting things and for approaching people.

Thursday
Jupiter · neutral

Venus, the lord of Vrishabha, regards Jupiter as neither friend nor enemy. Judge the day by the matter rather than by the vara.

Friday
Own day

Venus owns Vrishabha, so this is the rashi's own vara — traditionally the strongest of the seven for anything begun under this sign.

Saturday
Saturn · friend

Saturn is a natural friend of Venus, which owns Vrishabha. Favourable for starting things and for approaching people.

Rahu and Ketu appear nowhere above because they rule no weekday. The day takes its name from the graha holding its first hora, and the nodes have no body and so no hora — which is also why Rahu Kaal is an interval inside a day rather than a day of its own.

Chandra

Where the Moon goes in seven days

Full circuit
27.32 days

All twelve rashis, sidereal

Per rashi
about 2¼ days

27.32 days divided by 12

Per nakshatra
about 1 day

27.32 divided by 27 is 1.01

The Moon is the fastest of the grahas and the reason a reading has any weekly shape at all. In seven days it covers about 92 degrees — roughly three rashis — and about seven nakshatras. That near-exact day per nakshatra is why the panchang is organised around nakshatras rather than signs: the unit and the day line up.

A point commonly got wrong: the Moon is not in your sign every week. It returns to Vrishabha for about two and a quarter days once every four weeks or so. Those are the days a Chandra-based reading is most directly about you; the rest of the month it is transiting the other eleven houses from your rashi. Inside Vrishabha it crosses Krittika, Rohini and Mrigashira, at about a day each.

Questions

Taurus weekly horoscope — common questions

Which day of the week is best for Taurus?+

Friday. The seven weekdays are the seven grahas — each day is named for the planet ruling its first hora — and Friday belongs to Venus, which owns Vrishabha. That makes it the natural day for anything begun under this rashi. Wednesday and Saturday are also favourable, their lords being a natural friend of Venus. Sunday and Monday are traditionally avoided for new undertakings, being ruled by natural enemies of Venus — though those are considered good days for clearing an obstacle rather than starting something. This is a general rule for the rashi; a muhurta for a specific event also has to satisfy the tithi, the nakshatra and the hora.

Why are there only seven weekdays for nine grahas?+

Because Rahu and Ketu have no physical body and therefore no hora. The day is named for the graha ruling its first hora, and horas run in the Chaldean order of decreasing apparent speed — Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon. Twenty-four horas advance you 24 mod 7 = 3 places along that list of seven, so stepping by three from the Sun gives Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn: Sunday through Saturday, exactly the order we use, closing back on Sunday. Rahu and Ketu are the Moon's orbital nodes rather than bodies, so they enter the scheme nowhere, which is why they rule no day and why Rahu Kaal is an interval inside a day rather than a day of its own.

How much does the Moon move in a week?+

About a quarter of the zodiac. The Moon crosses all twelve rashis in 27.32 days and so spends about 2¼ days in each — meaning it passes through roughly three signs in seven days. It also covers about one nakshatra a day: 27.32 days divided by 27 nakshatras is 1.01 days each, which is precisely why the nakshatra is the daily unit of a panchang rather than the rashi. One consequence people get wrong: the Moon is not in your sign every week. It returns to Vrishabha for about two and a quarter days roughly once every four weeks, not once every seven days.

Which nakshatras does the Moon cross inside Taurus?+

Krittika (padas 2, 3, 4), Rohini (all four padas), Mrigashira (padas 1, 2) — three nakshatras and nine padas, as every rashi has. At about a day per nakshatra the Moon takes a little over two days to clear Vrishabha. Which of the three it is in matters more for a daily reading than the rashi does, because your Moon's nakshatra is what fixes your Vimshottari dasha sequence.

Is a weekly horoscope read from the Sun sign or the Moon sign?+

From the Moon sign, in Vedic astrology. Jyotish treats the Chandra rashi as primary and reads the Sun sign as a secondary indicator of vitality and position, which is the reverse of the Western convention most people have met. So this page is written for people whose Moon is in Vrishabha. If you have only ever been told your sign from your birth date, that is the tropical Sun sign — and on the sidereal zodiac Vedic astrology uses, it is often not even the same sign.
