Why one year is wider than the other
2027 returns 17 qualifying days for an upanayan and 2026 returns 13. The filter is identical in both and so is the closure list, so the whole difference is in where the closures fall — an intercalary lunar month in 2026 and not in 2027, and combustions that cost 45 days in 2026 against 8 days in 2027 because a combustion inside Chaturmas takes days Chaturmas had already shut. Take those two out of both years and the gap in open days falls from 73 days to 6; the cluster page works that through for all 7 occasions.
For this rite the effect is uneven rather than a shift. March 0 then 3, January 0 then 2, April 3 then 1, June 1 then 3 — 5 months of the twelve return the same count in both years, and even those do not return the same dates. One calendar date qualifies in both years: 3 December.

Closures: Kharmas, Adhika maas, Chaturmas. The Uttarayana half of the year is strongly preferred, and the rite has age rules of its own that take precedence over the panchang.
Uttarayana runs 14 January 2026 to 16 July 2026, and then 14 January 2027 to 17 July 2027, taken from the computed Makar and Karka ingresses in each year — they move by hours, not days, between the two. It is a preference rather than a filter, so it is stated on each month page and not used to exclude days here.

Over 2026 and 2027 together, tithi did the most excluding: it ruled out 166 of the 339 days that were examined at all, the other 391 having been shut by a closure before a limb was read. The rule most worth relaxing is a different one: 25 days fail on tithi and nothing else, so setting that single rule aside and holding the other four would return 55 days instead of 30. Which nakshatra gives the most days for upanayan?
