Bhava Karaka: The Fixed Significator of Each House
Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji
Bhava Karaka Meaning (भाव कारक)
Ask “which planet belongs to the 10th house?” and a jyotishi can give two honest answers. One is the lord: the ruler of whatever sign sits on the 10th in your chart, which changes with the lagna. The other is the bhava karaka, the house’s fixed significator, which Parashari practice assigns once and keeps the same in every chart ever drawn. This page is about the second answer, house by house, and about how the two answers meet.
“Fixed” is the word that matters. In the classical scheme the karaka of the 5th is Jupiter whether the lagna is Aries or Pisces; the 5th lord, by contrast, is the Sun for an Aries lagna and the Moon for a Pisces one. The house-lord vocabulary (lagnesh, bhagyesh and the rest) is set out on the house lord names page. The reverse direction, starting from a graha and listing everything it signifies, is the subject of the natural karaka table for the nine grahas. Here the starting point is always a house.
One more scheme uses the same word. The Jaimini chara karakas are movable: they go to grahas by how far each has advanced through its sign, so they differ from chart to chart, and the chara karaka page covers them. Nothing below belongs to that scheme.
The Karak Grah of Each House
The karaka grahas below are read off the site’s house table, which writes each karaka as a short line such as “Jupiter for dharma and the guru, Sun for the father”. The third column gives only the graha names taken from that line; the topics column is the house’s list of themes. The lines for the 6th and 8th go on to name bodily matters, and this page gives the grahas for those two rows and nothing more: a karaka is a signification in the tradition, not a statement about anyone’s body, and a question about a body belongs to a doctor.
| House | Bhava | Karaka graha(s) | Class | House topics |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Lagna / Tanu Bhava (तनु भाव) | Sun, with the lagna lord | kendra, trikona | personal identity, life direction |
| 2nd | Dhana Bhava (धन भाव) | Mercury and Jupiter | — | savings and wealth, family of origin, speech and voice, values |
| 3rd | Sahaja Bhava (सहज भाव) | Mars and Mercury | upachaya | younger siblings, courage and effort, communication style, short journeys |
| 4th | Sukha Bhava (सुख भाव) | Moon | kendra | mother's influence, home and property, inner contentment, vehicles |
| 5th | Putra Bhava (पुत्र भाव) | Jupiter | trikona | children, creativity and arts, romance, higher learning |
| 6th | Ari / Shatru Bhava (शत्रु भाव) | Mars and Saturn | dusthana, upachaya | debts and loans, service and routine, enemies |
| 7th | Kalatra Bhava (कलत्र भाव) | Jupiter and Venus | kendra | spouse or partner, marriage, business partnerships, public relations |
| 8th | Ayur / Mrityu Bhava (आयु भाव) | Saturn | dusthana | sudden change, occult and research, inheritance |
| 9th | Bhagya / Dharma Bhava (भाग्य भाव) | Sun and Jupiter | trikona | luck and fortune, father's influence, higher learning, pilgrimage |
| 10th | Karma Bhava (कर्म भाव) | Sun, Mercury and Saturn | kendra, upachaya | career and profession, public reputation, authority, achievements |
| 11th | Labha Bhava (लाभ भाव) | Jupiter | upachaya | income and gains, friends and networks, aspirations, elder siblings |
| 12th | Vyaya / Moksha Bhava (व्यय भाव) | Saturn and Ketu | dusthana | expenses and losses, foreign residence, spiritual liberation, subconscious mind |
Three rows need a sentence each. The 1st reads in full “Sun, and the Lagna lord itself”, which makes it the only house whose karaka line includes a lord. The lagna lord is the 1st lord by definition, so half of the 1st’s significator moves with the lagna, and the Sun part coincides with the lord only for a Leo lagna. The 5th is the one row with a title in it: “Jupiter, the Putra Karaka”, so Jupiter is the putra karaka in this reading. The 7th names Venus for the spouse and, in the table’s own words, “Jupiter for the husband in a woman’s chart”. That split belongs to the classical texts and is quoted as they give it; the page does not extend it to any other house.
Counted the Other Way: Which Houses Each Graha Carries
Turning the table round gives a list per graha. The class of each house (kendra, trikona, dusthana, upachaya) comes from the same house table.
| Graha | Karaka of | Houses |
|---|---|---|
| Sun (सूर्य) | 1st, 9th and 10th | 3 |
| Moon (चन्द्र) | 4th | 1 |
| Mars (मंगल) | 3rd and 6th | 2 |
| Mercury (बुध) | 2nd, 3rd and 10th | 3 |
| Jupiter (गुरु) | 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th | 5 |
| Venus (शुक्र) | 7th | 1 |
| Saturn (शनि) | 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th | 4 |
| Rahu (राहु) | no house in this table | 0 |
| Ketu (केतु) | 12th | 1 |
- Jupiter heads the count with five houses, then Saturn with four. The Sun and Mercury carry three each, Mars two, and the Moon, Venus and Ketu one apiece.
- Jupiter and Saturn share no house. Saturn’s houses include all three dusthanas, the 6th, 8th and 12th, plus the 10th. Jupiter’s include no dusthana at all, and they take in both trikonas other than the 1st, the 5th and 9th. The table records the pattern; it does not explain it, and this page adds no explanation of its own.
- Rahu is karaka of no house here. Ketu appears once, in the 12th, where the line reads “Saturn for loss, Ketu for moksha”.
- Seven houses name more than one graha: the 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 9th, 10th and 12th. The 10th names three, “Saturn for profession, Sun and Mercury for status”, so each graha carries a different strand of the house. The other five, the 1st, 4th, 5th, 8th and 11th, name one graha each (counting the 1st’s Sun and leaving its lagna-lord clause aside).
When the Karaka Is Also the Lord
Because the karaka is fixed and the lord is not, the two are sometimes the same graha and usually not. Running every lagna through the whole-sign lord table for the 2nd to the 12th house gives 132 house-and-lagna pairs. In 33 of them the house lord is one of that house’s karakas; in the other 99 it is a different graha.
| House | Karaka graha(s) | Lagnas where the lord is a karaka |
|---|---|---|
| 2nd | Mercury and Jupiter | Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius (4) |
| 3rd | Mars and Mercury | Aries, Cancer, Virgo, Aquarius (4) |
| 4th | Moon | Aries (1) |
| 5th | Jupiter | Leo, Scorpio (2) |
| 6th | Mars and Saturn | Gemini, Leo, Virgo, Scorpio (4) |
| 7th | Jupiter and Venus | Aries, Gemini, Virgo, Scorpio (4) |
| 8th | Saturn | Gemini, Cancer (2) |
| 9th | Sun and Jupiter | Aries, Cancer, Sagittarius (3) |
| 10th | Sun, Mercury and Saturn | Aries, Taurus, Virgo, Scorpio, Sagittarius (5) |
| 11th | Jupiter | Taurus, Aquarius (2) |
| 12th | Saturn and Ketu | Aquarius, Pisces (2) |
The 10th has the most coincidences, five lagnas, because its three karakas between them rule five of the twelve signs. The 4th has the fewest: its single karaka, the Moon, rules one sign, so only for an Aries lagna, with Cancer on the 4th, is the 4th lord also its karaka. A coincidence like this is a fact about the two tables lining up; it is not, on this page, a reading of anything.
Which Planet for the 5th, 8th and 10th House?
Three common forms of the question, and each has the same three-part answer: a fixed karaka, a natural lord from the Kaal Purush chart (in which Aries is the 1st), and a lord that depends on your lagna.
- 5th house: karaka Jupiter; natural lord Sun; the actual lord is a karaka only for Leo and Scorpio lagnas. Topics: children, creativity and arts, romance, higher learning.
- 8th house: karaka Saturn; natural lord, as the house table puts it, “Mars, with Ketu as co-lord”; the actual lord is the karaka only for Gemini and Cancer lagnas. Topics: sudden change, occult and research, inheritance.
- 10th house: karakas Sun, Mercury and Saturn; natural lord Saturn; the actual lord is one of the karakas for five lagnas. Topics: career and profession, public reputation, authority, achievements.
The natural lords of all twelve houses, and the lord of every house for every lagna, are tabled on the house lord names page linked above.
Karako Bhava Nashaya: A Debated Maxim
Some practitioners in the Parashari line quote a short maxim, karako bhava nashaya. As it is usually explained, it holds that a karaka placed in the very house it signifies is a weakness for that house’s matters rather than a strength. The stock example is Jupiter, the putra karaka, placed in the 5th.
It is a contested rule, not a settled one. Authors who use it attach exceptions and conditions, others set it aside, and the site’s own house table does not follow it: its entry for Jupiter in the 5th describes the placement as a strong one. The two positions are reported side by side so the disagreement stays visible. This page does not apply the maxim to any chart, and nothing here says what Jupiter in the 5th, or any karaka in its own house, means for a person.
Using a Karaka Beside the Lord: The 9th House
A karaka is one of three things a chart reader in this tradition looks at for a house, not a substitute for the other two. Take the 9th, the Bhagya / Dharma Bhava. Its karaka line is “Jupiter for dharma and the guru, Sun for the father”, so two grahas are on the list before any chart is drawn, each for a different strand of the house.
- The house itself. Say the lagna is Taurus. Counting whole signs, the 9th is Capricorn, and any graha sitting in Capricorn is an occupant of the 9th.
- The lord. Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, so for this lagna the bhagyesh is Saturn, which is also the 10th lord. Where Saturn sits is the second thing to note.
- The karakas. Separately, Jupiter is noted for the dharma and guru strand and the Sun for the father strand, wherever each happens to sit.
For a Taurus lagna, then, three different grahas are in play for one house. For Aries, Cancer and Sagittarius lagnas the 9th lord is itself one of the two karakas, so the list shortens; for the other nine it does not. The example stops at identifying what to look at. Weighing these factors against each other is chart reading, which this page does not do.
What This Page Does Not Do
It names the karaka of each house, counts the table, and shows where karaka and lord meet. It does not read your chart, forecast anything about any area of life, time any event, or say what a strong or weak karaka means for anyone. Each house’s full page is linked from the first table, the houses hub is at all twelve houses, and the guide to the 12 houses covers what each bhava stands for. To find your lagna, and with it every house lord, the free kundli gives the lagna, the Moon sign and nakshatra, the Sun sign, the running dasha, and the sign and house of Mars; it does not give the house of every graha. In Hindi: भाव कारक: 12 भावों के स्थिर कारक ग्रह.
Lords and Positions for Your Own Chart
The Janam Kundli report places the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn by sign and house and lists the twelve houses with their signs, their lords and where each lord sits, so you can find each karaka and each lord yourself. It does not place Rahu or Ketu, so the 12th house’s Ketu is not in it, and it contains no predictions or remedies.
