Chaiti Chhath 2027: Dates From Nahay Khay to Usha Arghya

Chaiti Chhath 2027 at a Glance (चैती छठ 2027 कब है)
Chaiti Chhath is the spring Chhath, kept on the bright-half Shashthi of Chaitra; the name simply means “the Chhath of Chaitra”. Households in Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh that keep it follow the same four-day order as the autumn festival. In 2027 that order runs from Saturday, 10 April 2027 to Tuesday, 13 April 2027, with the evening offering to the setting Sun on Monday, 12 April.
- Nahay Khay (नहाय खाय): Saturday, 10 April 2027
- Kharna (खरना): Sunday, 11 April 2027
- Sandhya Arghya (संध्या अर्घ्य): Monday, 12 April 2027
- Usha Arghya (उषा अर्घ्य): Tuesday, 13 April 2027
Locating the Chaitra Shashthi
The site’s 2027 festival table has a row for the Kartik Chhath but none for the Chaitra one, so the date here is worked out rather than looked up. The bright half of Chaitra opens with Gudi Padwa on Wednesday 7 April, the first day of Chaitra Navratri, and reaches its ninth tithi with Ram Navami on Thursday 15 April. Between those two, the daily panchang for New Delhi gives nine sunrises and nine tithis, one each, in order, with no tithi lost and none repeated. The sunrise that carries the Shashthi is the sixth of them, 12 April.
For the instants on either side, this page uses the site’s tithi routine, which is checked at build time against the tithi opening and closing instants of 86 festival-table rows and agrees with every one of them within 1 minute. By that working the Shashthi begins at 21:39 on 11 April and ends at 19:35 on 12 April. It is a night-to-evening tithi: it opens after dark on the Kharna day and is gone not long after sunset on the day of the evening offering.
The Four Days and Their Tithis
Chhath households name the days of the vrat by their tithi but do not date each one separately: the Shashthi is fixed first, and the rest follow two days before, one day before and the morning after. On each of the four days the tithi current at the New Delhi sunrise is the one the custom names.
| Day | Date | Sunrise tithi | That tithi runs | Sunrise / sunset (New Delhi) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nahay Khay | Saturday 10 April | Chaturthi | 01:32 10 April to 23:40 10 April | 06:01 / 18:43 |
| Kharna | Sunday 11 April | Panchami | 23:40 10 April to 21:39 11 April | 06:00 / 18:44 |
| Sandhya Arghya | Monday 12 April | Shashthi | 21:39 11 April to 19:35 12 April | 05:59 / 18:45 |
| Usha Arghya | Tuesday 13 April | Saptami | 19:35 12 April to 17:29 13 April | 05:58 / 18:45 |
The Chaturthi and the Panchami both begin on 10 April, the second of them shortly before midnight, which is why the Nahay Khay day starts in one tithi and ends in the next. That does not disturb the count. On the custom’s account, Nahay Khay is the day of the ritual bath and a single plain meal without onion or garlic; Kharna is a day of fasting that closes after sunset with a sweet offering of gur kheer and roti, which is then shared in the household; the Shashthi is the day of the evening arghya at the water; and the Saptami morning brings the second arghya, to the rising Sun, after which the fast is broken.
Is the Shashthi Current at Sunset?
The Kartik row in the festival table carries the rule “tithi at pradosh”, and since the Chaitra observance has the same shape, this page applies the same test to the Chaitra Shashthi, using each city’s sunset as a single test instant. Two evenings are candidates. On Sunday 11 April the Shashthi has not yet begun at sunset anywhere on the site’s list of 38 panchang cities; it opens at least 2 hours 40 minutes after the latest of those sunsets. On Monday 12 April it is current at sunset in all 38. The sunset reading and the sunrise reading therefore pick the same day.
The margin on 12 April is narrower than the Kartik one: widest in the east, at Guwahati with 1 hour 51 minutes, and thinnest in the west. The Shashthi ends at 19:35. Patna keeps 1 hour 25 minutes of it after sunset and Kolkata 1 hour 40 minutes; at New Delhi, where the Sun sets at 18:45, 50 minutes is left, and the slimmest margin on the whole list is 36 minutes, at Ahmedabad and Jodhpur. This page tests the moment of sunset only. A local almanac that asks for more of the evening than that is applying a stricter test, and families far west of the Chhath heartland may want to see which test their own almanac uses.
Sunset on 12 April, Sunrise on 13 April, City by City
By custom the two arghyas are offered as the Sun meets the horizon, so the figures below are plain sunset and sunrise, computed for each city’s centre with the routine behind the city panchang pages. They are not puja windows. Gaya, Bhagalpur and Muzaffarpur are not on the site’s city list, so the Patna row stands in for the rest of Bihar.
| City | Sunset 12 April | Shashthi left after sunset | Sunrise 13 April | Tithi at that sunrise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Patna, Bihar | 18:10 | 1 hour 25 minutes | 05:29 | Saptami |
| Ranchi, Jharkhand | 18:08 | 1 hour 27 minutes | 05:30 | Saptami |
| Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh | 18:19 | 1 hour 16 minutes | 05:38 | Saptami |
| Kolkata, West Bengal | 17:55 | 1 hour 40 minutes | 05:18 | Saptami |
| Delhi, Delhi NCR | 18:45 | 50 minutes | 05:58 | Saptami |
The Delhi row matches the New Delhi daily table to the minute, which is the check that the two computations agree. The Saptami runs until 17:29 on 13 April, so every dawn on the list falls well inside it. A real ghat may lose the Sun earlier than a city-centre figure suggests if trees or buildings block the horizon. For any other town, the panchang tool gives local sunrise and sunset.
Inside Chaitra Navratri
Because no tithi is skipped between Gudi Padwa and the Shashthi, the evening arghya falls on the sixth day of Chaitra Navratri, and Ram Navami comes three days after it. The rest of the month is laid out on the Chaitra month 2027 page and in the April 2027 vrat and tyohar list.
Chaiti and Kartik Chhath in 2027
The autumn Chhath of the same year has its evening arghya on Thursday, 4 November 2027, 206 days later; its four days run 2 November to 5 November, and the sunrise tithis match the custom’s names on all four, as they do in April. Two differences show up in the figures. In November the Shashthi is still running 4 hours 4 minutes after the New Delhi sunset, against 50 minutes in April, so the autumn date has no thin margin anywhere. And the clock moves: at Patna the April sunset on the Shashthi comes at 18:10, 1 hour 4 minutes later than the November one at 17:06, and the April dawn at 05:29 is earlier than the November one at 05:59. The Chhath 2027 page has the November details, and the Chhath Puja 2026 page covers this autumn’s festival.
Surya, Chhathi Maiya and the Fast (सूर्य और छठी मैया)
In the custom of the Bhojpuri, Magahi and Maithili households that keep Chhath, the arghyas are addressed to Surya, the Sun as seen on the horizon, and the songs at the ghat also invoke Chhathi Maiya, the goddess of the sixth. The vrati makes the offering standing in the water, and thekua and seasonal fruit go into the bamboo baskets. Whether a household keeps the Kartik observance alone or both is a matter of family custom, and this page makes no claim about what either vrat brings to those who keep it.
By the custom’s own reckoning the vrati goes without food or water from the Kharna meal until after the dawn arghya. Anyone with a medical condition, anyone pregnant and anyone on medication should ask their doctor before a waterless fast.
In Short
Chaiti Chhath 2027: Nahay Khay Saturday 10 April, Kharna Sunday 11 April, the evening arghya Monday 12 April (sunset 18:10 at Patna), the dawn arghya Tuesday 13 April (sunrise 05:29 at Patna). The Shashthi holds that evening in every city the site covers, by 36 minutes in the tightest case. Other observances are indexed on the festival hub. In Hindi: चैती छठ 2027: नहाय खाय से उषा अर्घ्य तक की तारीखें.
Keeping Chhath Away From Bihar?
In the cities of western India the Shashthi is over within the hour after sunset. Our Vedic astrologers can read your town’s sunset against it and talk it through with your family’s almanac.
