Sudarshan Chakra Kundli: Reading One House from the Lagna, the Moon and the Sun
Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji
A Sudarshan Chakra kundli is not a new chart. It is the ordinary birth chart drawn three times on one wheel, each time with a different sign standing in the first house. Once you can count houses from a sign, you can build one by hand. This page shows how the counting works, works one example through all twelve houses, proves the one regularity that makes the wheel easy to read, and samples a year of sky to see how often two of the three rings fall on top of each other.
What Is Sudarshan Chakra in Astrology (सुदर्शन चक्र)
The name is that of the discus of Vishnu in the Puranas. As a chart, the Sudarshana chakra is set out in its own chapter of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. That chapter describes three concentric rings. The innermost is the lagna chart, with the rising sign as the first house. The middle ring is the chart counted from the sign the Moon occupies, the Chandra lagna. The outermost is the chart counted from the sign the Sun occupies, sometimes called the Surya lagna. The grahas are placed in each ring by the sign they occupy, so each graha appears three times, once in each ring.
The wheel is divided into twelve spokes, and each spoke carries a single house number through all three rings. Reading along the tenth spoke, for instance, gives the tenth from the lagna, the tenth from the Moon and the tenth from the Sun side by side. The Parashari text has each house judged from all three together rather than from the lagna alone. This page reports that method and computes the counting it rests on; it does not judge any house.
How to Read Sudarshan Chakra: Counting the Three Rings
Each ring is a whole-sign count. Start at the reference sign, call it the first, and count forward through the zodiac in its usual order: Aries, Taurus, Gemini and on to Pisces, then back to Aries. The sign you land on after counting to five is the fifth house of that ring. The count includes the starting sign, which is why the sign opposite is the seventh and not the sixth. The same arithmetic lies behind bhavat bhavam, where a house is counted from another house, and behind Chandra Bala, where the transiting Moon is counted from the birth Moon sign.
Three inputs are needed: the lagna sign, the Moon sign and the Sun sign. Nothing else changes between the rings. The lagna depends on the birth time and place, and the Moon changes sign every two or three days, so those two inputs need an accurate birth time; the Sun stays in one sidereal sign for about a month. The two outer rings start from the two signs compared on the Sun sign and Moon sign page.
A Worked Three-Ring Table
Take a lagna of Virgo (कन्या), the Moon in Capricorn (मकर) and the Sun in Scorpio (वृश्चिक). These are chosen to show the counting; they are an example, not anyone’s chart. In this example the Moon is in the fifth house from the lagna and the Sun in the third. Each row below is one spoke. The first three sign columns are the three rings; the last two columns take the sign in the lagna ring and say which house that same sign is when counted from the Moon and from the Sun.
| Spoke (house) | Lagna ring | Moon ring | Sun ring | Lagna-ring sign, from the Moon | Lagna-ring sign, from the Sun |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Virgo | Capricorn | Scorpio | 9th | 11th |
| 2nd | Libra | Aquarius | Sagittarius | 10th | 12th |
| 3rd | Scorpio | Pisces | Capricorn | 11th | 1st |
| 4th | Sagittarius | Aries | Aquarius | 12th | 2nd |
| 5th | Capricorn | Taurus | Pisces | 1st | 3rd |
| 6th | Aquarius | Gemini | Aries | 2nd | 4th |
| 7th | Pisces | Cancer | Taurus | 3rd | 5th |
| 8th | Aries | Leo | Gemini | 4th | 6th |
| 9th | Taurus | Virgo | Cancer | 5th | 7th |
| 10th | Gemini | Libra | Leo | 6th | 8th |
| 11th | Cancer | Scorpio | Virgo | 7th | 9th |
| 12th | Leo | Sagittarius | Libra | 8th | 10th |
Read across the 10th spoke. In the lagna ring it holds Gemini; in the Moon ring, Libra; in the Sun ring, Leo. Three different signs answer to the name “tenth house” in one chart. Now follow the lagna ring’s Gemini the other way: counted from the Moon in Capricorn it is the sixth house, and counted from the Sun in Scorpio it is the eighth. The wheel shows the first view, house by house. The last two columns give the second, sign by sign. Both are the same counting, read in two directions.
The Offset Between Rings Is the Same All the Way Round
Look down the last two columns. Every sign in the lagna ring is 4 houses lower when counted from the Moon, and 2 lower when counted from the Sun, wrapping round past the first to the twelfth. That is no accident of the example. The Moon ring is the lagna ring turned by a fixed number of signs, and turning a wheel moves every spoke by the same amount. The fixed number is one less than the Moon’s house from the lagna: with the Moon in the fifth, the shift is 4. The same holds between the lagna ring and the Sun ring, and between the Moon ring and the Sun ring.
To check it rather than assert it, every pairing of a lagna sign with a Moon sign was run through all twelve houses with the site’s sign arithmetic: 1,728 checks. In every one, the house a sign holds from the Moon equals its house from the lagna less the same fixed shift. So the whole three-ring wheel is fixed by two numbers: the house of the Moon from the lagna and the house of the Sun from the lagna. Once those are known, a reader can fill in any spoke without counting the zodiac again.
When the Three Rings Coincide
If the Moon is in the lagna sign, the shift between the inner and middle rings is zero, and the two rings carry the same sign on every spoke. If the Sun is also in that sign, all three rings coincide, and the Sudarshana chakra shows nothing the lagna chart does not; the 1,728 checks above include every such case. Any two rings can coincide on their own. The pair that the sky decides without reference to the birth time or place is the Moon ring and the Sun ring, which coincide whenever the Moon and the Sun share a sign.
How Often the Moon Ring and the Sun Ring Coincide: 2027 Sampled
The site’s lunar and solar ephemeris was sampled every 3 hours through 2027, 2,920 instants in all, and the sidereal sign of the Moon and of the Sun was taken at each. At 229 of those instants, 7.8%, the two were in the same sign. An even spread over the twelve houses would give 8.3%; one year does not hold a whole number of lunar months, and the Moon’s speed varies, so a single year’s sample need not split evenly. The coinciding instants fell in 13 separate stretches of a little over two days each on average. Sharing a sign puts the Moon within 30° of the Sun, so these stretches all fall around an amavasya, a new moon.
The table gives the house of the Moon counted from the Sun across the whole sample. It is a count of instants in one year of sky, not of people or of births.
| Moon’s house from the Sun | Instants in 2027 | Share |
|---|---|---|
| 1st (rings coincide) | 229 | 7.8% |
| 2nd | 235 | 8.0% |
| 3rd | 238 | 8.2% |
| 4th | 264 | 9.0% |
| 5th | 248 | 8.5% |
| 6th | 245 | 8.4% |
| 7th | 258 | 8.8% |
| 8th | 275 | 9.4% |
| 9th | 232 | 7.9% |
| 10th | 222 | 7.6% |
| 11th | 237 | 8.1% |
| 12th | 237 | 8.1% |
The shares run from 7.6% for the tenth to 9.4% for the eighth. In a chart this number is the shift between the Sun ring and the Moon ring, so it says how far apart the two outer rings are turned; it says nothing more about the chart than that. Another year sampled the same way would give a slightly different spread.
The Sudarshana Dasha: Named, Not Applied
The same chapter of the Parashari text pairs the chakra with a timing scheme, the Sudarshana dasha, which assigns successive years of life to successive houses of the wheel. A search for “sudarshan chakra kundli prediction” is, in effect, a question about that scheme. This page names it and does not apply it: it attaches no year or age to any house, and it times nothing in anyone’s life. The timing system the site does compute is the Vimshottari dasha, in the dasha calculator.
Building Your Own Wheel, and What This Page Does Not Do
For “kundli me sudarshan chakra kaise dekhe”, the steps are the ones above: find the three signs, write the twelve signs from the lagna in the inner ring, start the middle ring at the Moon sign and the outer ring at the Sun sign, and place each graha in each ring by its sign. The free kundli gives the lagna, the Moon sign and the Sun sign; the ascendant calculator gives the lagna with its degree, and the Moon sign calculator the Moon sign with its nakshatra. None of them draws the wheel.
This page reads no house in any ring and says nothing about what a graha in a house brings. It does not say that a house supported in all three rings brings any particular result, and it does not date any event. What each house signifies in the lagna chart is on the twelve houses pages; the Sudarshana chakra only changes which sign is counted as the first. In Hindi: सुदर्शन चक्र कुंडली: तीन वलय, एक भाव.
The Three Starting Signs, Computed
The Janam Kundli report gives the lagna and the sign, degree and house of the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, with the twelve houses and their lords. It does not draw a Sudarshana chakra, it does not place Rahu or Ketu, and it contains no predictions.
