What a Sign Pair Can and Cannot Tell You
Ashtakoota awards 36 guna across eight tests. Only three of the eight can be read from two Moon signs: Varna, Graha Maitri and Bhakoot, worth 13 guna between them. The four heaviest tests — Nadi (8), Gana (6), Yoni (4) and Tara (3) — are decided by the birth nakshatra, and Vashya (2) turns on half-sign divisions the authorities assign differently. So a page like this one can give you 13 guna honestly and cannot give you the other 23 at all.
This is worth knowing because most sign-compatibility tools quote a single percentage. There is no classical calculation that produces one from two sign names.

The Three Rashi Kootas / राशि कूट
Cancer and Aquarius form the 6/8 axis — Shadashtak dosha. Bhakoot is all-or-nothing.
Neutral against enemy. The table is one-sided here: Moon treats Saturn as neutral, while Saturn treats Moon as an enemy.
Cancer is Brahmin (priestly — reflective, values-led) and Aquarius is Shudra (artisan — adaptable, service-minded). Varna is directional: it scores 1 when the man's varna rank is equal or higher and 0 when it is lower, so this pair scores 1 with the Cancer partner as the man and 0 the other way round.
The 6/8 Axis / भकूट
Shadashtak — the hardest of the three. One sign falls in the other's 6th house of illness, debt and conflict, the other in the 8th of upheaval and longevity. The reading is again asymmetric: the partner in the 8th position from the other carries more of the strain. This is the Bhakoot dosha the classics take most seriously, and the one where a cancellation should be demonstrated rather than assumed.
Shadashtak dosha applies and is not cancelled by the standard exception
Moon and Saturn are not natural friends, so Graha Maitri scores 0.5 of 5 rather than the full 5 that cancels Bhakoot. Other cancellations exist — a shared nakshatra lord is the common one — but they need both birth nakshatras, not the signs.
The Two Sign Lords in Each Other’s Signs
Guna Milan never asks where each sign’s lord would stand in the other’s sign — but the question is answerable from the two rashis alone, and the answer differs across all 66 pairs of different signs. Moon, the lord of Cancer, is in a neutral sign in Aquarius, and Saturn, the lord of Aquarius, is in an enemy's sign in Cancer. Neither direction is dramatic, so this test neither helps nor harms the pair.
Lord of Cancer · सम क्षेत्र
Aquarius belongs to Saturn, toward whom Moon is neither friendly nor hostile. Moon is therefore neither strengthened nor weakened in Aquarius — on this test the pair is simply not commented on in that direction, which is a more honest answer than manufacturing one.
A dignity is not a score and there is no guna attached to it — this is a statement about how comfortably each sign’s lord sits in the other’s territory, which is the sort of thing an astrologer reads from the chart and a compatibility percentage cannot encode. In a real kundli match it would be weighed against where those planets actually fall in the two birth charts, which can strengthen or override it.
Mobility — Chara and Sthira
The twelve rashis divide three ways by mobility: Cancer is Chara (movable) and Aquarius is Sthira (fixed). One sign is Chara, movable, and the other Sthira, fixed — the classically complementary mobility pairing. One partner initiates and the other consolidates, which works well while both accept the division and becomes a standing argument the moment the fixed partner is asked to move quickly or the movable one is asked to settle.
Mobility carries no guna either, and it is not the same distinction as element — it describes how a sign holds a position rather than what it cares about, which is why it explains a different class of argument from the Water-versus-Air one below.
Cancer in a Relationship
Cancer attaches deeply and quickly, and once attached it defends. It reads mood with uncomfortable accuracy and reciprocates care in kind — a Cancer who feels secure is the most nurturing partner in the zodiac.
What it needs
Emotional safety and explicit reassurance. Cancer does not assume it is loved; it needs to be told, more often than most partners think necessary.
Where it goes wrong
Hurt is not discussed, it is withdrawn from, and the withdrawal can last. Cancer keeps a long private ledger of slights, and the partner is usually unaware the ledger exists until it is read out.
Cancer horoscope →Aquarius in a Relationship
Aquarius wants a friend first and a partner second, and the friendship is not a lesser thing — it is what makes the rest durable. It is loyal, unpossessive, and genuinely uninterested in conventional expectations of how a couple should behave.
What it needs
Independence, intellectual respect, and space that is not negotiated for. Aquarius needs to be left alone sometimes without it meaning anything.
Where it goes wrong
Emotional detachment at exactly the moment closeness is wanted. Aquarius processes feeling as an idea, which the partner experiences as being held at a distance during the hardest conversations.
Aquarius horoscope →Where the Friction Sits
Cancer works in Water and Aquarius in Air, which is where the recurring misunderstanding will live. It shows up as a difference in pace and in what each treats as obvious rather than as a difference in intention. Moon and Saturn set different priorities, and in practice the argument is usually between those two priorities rather than between the two people.
Read the two profiles above against each other and the specific fault line is usually obvious: “Hurt is not discussed, it is withdrawn from, and the withdrawal can last” meeting “emotional detachment at exactly the moment closeness is wanted” is the pattern this pair will keep returning to.

Get the Other 23 Guna
Nadi, Gana, Yoni and Tara account for 21 of the 36 guna and all four need both birth nakshatras — which need birth time and place, not just the sign. Kundli matching calculates the full Ashtakoota, plus Mangal dosha and the 7th house, which sit outside Guna Milan entirely.
