Cancer & Pisces

कर्क और मीन राशि अनुकूलता

5 / 13guna readable from the Moon signs

5/9 axis · Navpancham dosha · Bhakoot 0/7 · Graha Maitri 4/5

What a Sign Pair Can and Cannot Tell You

Ashtakoota awards 36 guna across eight tests. Only three of the eight can be read from two Moon signs: Varna, Graha Maitri and Bhakoot, worth 13 guna between them. The four heaviest tests — Nadi (8), Gana (6), Yoni (4) and Tara (3) — are decided by the birth nakshatra, and Vashya (2) turns on half-sign divisions the authorities assign differently. So a page like this one can give you 13 guna honestly and cannot give you the other 23 at all.

This is worth knowing because most sign-compatibility tools quote a single percentage. There is no classical calculation that produces one from two sign names.

The Three Rashi Kootas / राशि कूट

Bhakoot (Rashi Koota) (भकूट)0 / 7

Cancer and Pisces form the 5/9 axis — Navpancham dosha. Bhakoot is all-or-nothing.

Graha Maitri (ग्रह मैत्री)4 / 5

Friend and neutral. The table is one-sided here: Moon treats Jupiter as neutral, while Jupiter treats Moon as a friend.

Varna (वर्ण)1 / 1

Both signs are Brahmin varna (priestly — reflective, values-led), so this scores the full 1 whichever way round the couple is.

The 5/9 Axis / भकूट

This is the dharma trine, and the most interesting contradiction in Ashtakoota. Being 5th and 9th from each other is the single most auspicious relationship two houses can have — it governs children, teaching, shared belief and genuine attraction — and yet Bhakoot scores it 0. Most authorities treat Navpancham dosha as the mildest of the three and freely cancel it, precisely because the underlying relationship is so favourable. A pair scoring 0 here is not in the same position as a pair scoring 0 on Shadashtak.

Navpancham dosha applies and is not cancelled by the standard exception

Moon and Jupiter are not natural friends, so Graha Maitri scores 4 of 5 rather than the full 5 that cancels Bhakoot. Other cancellations exist — a shared nakshatra lord is the common one — but they need both birth nakshatras, not the signs.

The Two Sign Lords in Each Other’s Signs

Guna Milan never asks where each sign’s lord would stand in the other’s sign — but the question is answerable from the two rashis alone, and the answer differs across all 66 pairs of different signs. Moon, the lord of Cancer, is in a neutral sign in Pisces, and Jupiter, the lord of Pisces, is exalted in Cancer. One direction is strong; the other is unremarkable, which is the common shape.

Moon in Pisces

Neutral sign

Lord of Cancer · सम क्षेत्र

Pisces belongs to Jupiter, toward whom Moon is neither friendly nor hostile. Moon is therefore neither strengthened nor weakened in Pisces — on this test the pair is simply not commented on in that direction, which is a more honest answer than manufacturing one.

Jupiter in Cancer

Exalted

Lord of Pisces · उच्च · Jupiter at 5°

Jupiter rules Pisces and reaches its exaltation in Cancer — Jupiter at 5°, the highest of the dignities. On this test Cancer is the best possible host for Pisces's lord: whatever Pisces depends on Jupiter for, Cancer strengthens rather than obstructs.

A dignity is not a score and there is no guna attached to it — this is a statement about how comfortably each sign’s lord sits in the other’s territory, which is the sort of thing an astrologer reads from the chart and a compatibility percentage cannot encode. In a real kundli match it would be weighed against where those planets actually fall in the two birth charts, which can strengthen or override it.

Mobility — Chara and Dvisvabhava

The twelve rashis divide three ways by mobility: Cancer is Chara (movable) and Pisces is Dvisvabhava (dual). Chara meets Dvisvabhava, dual. The movable sign sets the direction and the dual sign adapts to it, which makes for unusually little friction over decisions — and unusually little resistance when a direction should have been questioned.

Mobility carries no guna either, and it is not the same distinction as element — it describes how a sign holds a position rather than what it cares about, which is why it explains a different class of argument from the shared Water one below.

Cancer in a Relationship

Cancer attaches deeply and quickly, and once attached it defends. It reads mood with uncomfortable accuracy and reciprocates care in kind — a Cancer who feels secure is the most nurturing partner in the zodiac.

What it needs

Emotional safety and explicit reassurance. Cancer does not assume it is loved; it needs to be told, more often than most partners think necessary.

Where it goes wrong

Hurt is not discussed, it is withdrawn from, and the withdrawal can last. Cancer keeps a long private ledger of slights, and the partner is usually unaware the ledger exists until it is read out.

Pisces in a Relationship

Pisces gives more than it is asked for and reads its partner's state before being told. It is romantic in the literal sense — it forms an image of the relationship and then loves the image with real devotion, sometimes past the point where the actual relationship supports it.

What it needs

Gentleness, emotional attunement, and a partner who does not exploit the willingness to give.

Where it goes wrong

The boundaries are porous, so Pisces absorbs the partner's moods and loses its own position. Difficulty is avoided rather than addressed — the escape can be literal — and the idealisation makes it slow to see who the partner actually is.

Where the Friction Sits

Both signs are Water, so they share a basic mode of operating and will rarely misread each other's motives. The classical caution about a same-element pair is that it has no corrective: what Cancer overdoes, Pisces also overdoes, and there is nobody in the room supplying the missing element. Moon and Jupiter set different priorities, and in practice the argument is usually between those two priorities rather than between the two people.

Read the two profiles above against each other and the specific fault line is usually obvious: “Hurt is not discussed, it is withdrawn from, and the withdrawal can last” meeting “the boundaries are porous, so Pisces absorbs the partner's moods and loses its own position” is the pattern this pair will keep returning to.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Cancer and Pisces compatible in Vedic astrology?
Of the eight Ashtakoota tests, three can be read from the Moon signs alone and this pair scores 5 of those 13 guna: Bhakoot 0 of 7, Graha Maitri 4 of 5, and Varna 1 of 1. The remaining 23 guna — Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi, plus Vashya — cannot be derived from sun-sign or Moon-sign labels at all; they need both birth nakshatras. Anyone quoting you a single compatibility percentage from two sign names is not calculating anything.
What is the Bhakoot score for Cancer and Pisces?
Cancer and Pisces are 9 and 5 houses apart depending on the direction counted, which is the 5/9 axis — Navpancham dosha. Bhakoot is all-or-nothing, so this scores 0 of 7. The three axes that score zero are 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8. No standard cancellation applies here, so this one should be examined rather than waved through.
Can Cancer and Pisces marry?
Guna Milan is a filter, not a verdict, and 18 of 36 is the conventional pass mark. Nothing in a sign pair can rule out a marriage, because the tests that carry the most weight — Nadi at 8 guna and Gana at 6 — are nakshatra-based, and because Mangal dosha, the state of the 7th house, and both Venus positions sit outside Guna Milan entirely. A pair that scores badly on rashi grounds can match well on nakshatra grounds and vice versa.
Which planets rule Cancer and Pisces?
Cancer is ruled by Moon and Pisces by Jupiter. On the natural friendship table that pairing comes out friend and neutral, which Graha Maitri pays 4 of 5, and the two lords do not read each other alike — Moon sees Jupiter one way and is seen another, which the koota counts once from each side. Because the friendship table is permanent, this part of the reading is the same for every couple with these two Moon signs — it is the one component of compatibility that genuinely is fixed by the signs.
Is there anything about Cancer and Pisces that Ashtakoota leaves out?
Yes — the dignity of each sign's lord in the other's sign, which no koota measures. Placed in Pisces, Moon is in a neutral's sign; placed in Cancer, Jupiter is exalted. The order of dignities is exaltation, moolatrikona, own sign, a friend's sign, a neutral's sign, an enemy's sign, then debilitation. Neither lord is debilitated here, which is worth noting because eleven of the 66 pairs of different signs do have a fallen lord and their guna scores do not show it. Mobility is the other omission: Cancer is Chara and Pisces is Dvisvabhava, and that governs how each partner holds a position rather than what they want.
What remedies help a Cancer–Pisces relationship?
Strengthening Moon and Jupiter — the two sign lords — is the standard approach, through their beej mantras and weekday observance. For the Navpancham specifically, tradition prescribes remedies aimed at the affliction rather than at the signs: the relevant graha shanti, and in the case of a serious Bhakoot affliction a properly conducted puja before the marriage. A gemstone should not be worn on compatibility grounds alone; it strengthens a planet unconditionally and may be the wrong planet for one of the two charts.
Is sun-sign compatibility the same as rashi compatibility?
No, and the difference matters here. Vedic astrology matches Chandra rashi — the sidereal Moon sign — while Western sun-sign compatibility uses the tropical Sun sign. The two systems differ by roughly 24 degrees of ayanamsa, so your Vedic Moon sign is usually not the sign you would call yours from a magazine. Everything on this page is the Vedic reading. If you do not know your Moon sign, a free kundli will give it from your birth time and place.

Get the Other 23 Guna

Nadi, Gana, Yoni and Tara account for 21 of the 36 guna and all four need both birth nakshatras — which need birth time and place, not just the sign. Kundli matching calculates the full Ashtakoota, plus Mangal dosha and the 7th house, which sit outside Guna Milan entirely.

How Cancer and Pisces actually get along

Everything above is the arithmetic — the three rashi kootas a kundli match scores, the Bhakuta axis, Moon and Jupiter in each other’s signs. The Cancer and Pisces relationship guide is the other half: how the two communicate, where the friction shows up day to day, and what each tends to want from the other. Read this one for the guna, that one for the relationship.
