What a Sign Pair Can and Cannot Tell You
Ashtakoota awards 36 guna across eight tests. Only three of the eight can be read from two Moon signs: Varna, Graha Maitri and Bhakoot, worth 13 guna between them. The four heaviest tests — Nadi (8), Gana (6), Yoni (4) and Tara (3) — are decided by the birth nakshatra, and Vashya (2) turns on half-sign divisions the authorities assign differently. So a page like this one can give you 13 guna honestly and cannot give you the other 23 at all.
This is worth knowing because most sign-compatibility tools quote a single percentage. There is no classical calculation that produces one from two sign names.

The Three Rashi Kootas / राशि कूट
Aries and Pisces form the 2/12 axis — Dwirdwadash dosha. Bhakoot is all-or-nothing.
Mutual friends. Mars and Jupiter are natural friends to each other.
Aries is Kshatriya (warrior — assertive, protective) and Pisces is Brahmin (priestly — reflective, values-led). Varna is directional: it scores 1 when the man's varna rank is equal or higher and 0 when it is lower, so this pair scores 1 with the Pisces partner as the man and 0 the other way round.
The 2/12 Axis / भकूट
One sign sits in the other's 2nd house — family, savings, speech — while that other sits in its 12th, the house of loss and expenditure. The classical reading is asymmetric: the partner in the 12th position tends to give more than they receive, in money and in effort. Of the three Bhakoot doshas this is the one most often cited in refusals, because it names a specific and durable imbalance rather than a general difficulty.
Dwirdwadash dosha is cancelled here
The widely accepted cancellation is a Graha Maitri of 5 — the two sign lords being the same planet or natural friends. Mars and Jupiter are natural friends, so the dosha is treated as nullified and the pair is read on its other kootas.
The Two Sign Lords in Each Other’s Signs
Guna Milan never asks where each sign’s lord would stand in the other’s sign — but the question is answerable from the two rashis alone, and the answer differs across all 66 pairs of different signs. Mars, the lord of Aries, is in a friend's sign in Pisces, and Jupiter, the lord of Pisces, is in a friend's sign in Aries. Neither direction is dramatic, so this test neither helps nor harms the pair.
Lord of Aries · मित्र क्षेत्र
Pisces belongs to Jupiter, whom Mars counts a natural friend, so Aries's lord is a welcome guest rather than a merely tolerated one. Not a strength on the scale of exaltation, but nothing in this direction works against the pair.
Lord of Pisces · मित्र क्षेत्र
The reverse reads the same way and for its own reason: Aries answers to Mars, whom Jupiter counts a natural friend, so Pisces's lord is received rather than merely tolerated in Aries. Friendly in both directions is the second-best shape this test produces — twelve of the 66 pairs have it — and it is a quiet strength no guna total will report.
A dignity is not a score and there is no guna attached to it — this is a statement about how comfortably each sign’s lord sits in the other’s territory, which is the sort of thing an astrologer reads from the chart and a compatibility percentage cannot encode. In a real kundli match it would be weighed against where those planets actually fall in the two birth charts, which can strengthen or override it.
Mobility — Chara and Dvisvabhava
The twelve rashis divide three ways by mobility: Aries is Chara (movable) and Pisces is Dvisvabhava (dual). Chara meets Dvisvabhava, dual. The movable sign sets the direction and the dual sign adapts to it, which makes for unusually little friction over decisions — and unusually little resistance when a direction should have been questioned.
Mobility carries no guna either, and it is not the same distinction as element — it describes how a sign holds a position rather than what it cares about, which is why it explains a different class of argument from the Fire-versus-Water one below.
Aries in a Relationship
Aries pursues. It is direct to the point of bluntness, decides quickly, and would rather have the argument now than let it sit. There is no game-playing here, which is either refreshing or alarming depending on who is receiving it.
What it needs
A partner who does not require to be chased indefinitely and who says what they mean. Aries reads hinting as dishonesty.
Where it goes wrong
The temper arrives fast and leaves fast, which Aries treats as settled and the other person often does not. Boredom in a stable relationship is the real risk — Aries mistakes calm for something being wrong.
Aries horoscope →Pisces in a Relationship
Pisces gives more than it is asked for and reads its partner's state before being told. It is romantic in the literal sense — it forms an image of the relationship and then loves the image with real devotion, sometimes past the point where the actual relationship supports it.
What it needs
Gentleness, emotional attunement, and a partner who does not exploit the willingness to give.
Where it goes wrong
The boundaries are porous, so Pisces absorbs the partner's moods and loses its own position. Difficulty is avoided rather than addressed — the escape can be literal — and the idealisation makes it slow to see who the partner actually is.
Pisces horoscope →Where the Friction Sits
Aries works in Fire and Pisces in Water, which is where the recurring misunderstanding will live. It shows up as a difference in pace and in what each treats as obvious rather than as a difference in intention. Mars and Jupiter set different priorities, and in practice the argument is usually between those two priorities rather than between the two people.
Read the two profiles above against each other and the specific fault line is usually obvious: “The temper arrives fast and leaves fast, which Aries treats as settled and the other person often does not” meeting “the boundaries are porous, so Pisces absorbs the partner's moods and loses its own position” is the pattern this pair will keep returning to.

Get the Other 23 Guna
Nadi, Gana, Yoni and Tara account for 21 of the 36 guna and all four need both birth nakshatras — which need birth time and place, not just the sign. Kundli matching calculates the full Ashtakoota, plus Mangal dosha and the 7th house, which sit outside Guna Milan entirely.
