What a Sign Pair Can and Cannot Tell You
Ashtakoota awards 36 guna across eight tests. Only three of the eight can be read from two Moon signs: Varna, Graha Maitri and Bhakoot, worth 13 guna between them. The four heaviest tests — Nadi (8), Gana (6), Yoni (4) and Tara (3) — are decided by the birth nakshatra, and Vashya (2) turns on half-sign divisions the authorities assign differently. So a page like this one can give you 13 guna honestly and cannot give you the other 23 at all.
This is worth knowing because most sign-compatibility tools quote a single percentage. There is no classical calculation that produces one from two sign names.

The Three Rashi Kootas / राशि कूट
Aquarius and Pisces form the 2/12 axis — Dwirdwadash dosha. Bhakoot is all-or-nothing.
Mutually neutral. Saturn and Jupiter are naturally neutral to each other.
Aquarius is Shudra (artisan — adaptable, service-minded) and Pisces is Brahmin (priestly — reflective, values-led). Varna is directional: it scores 1 when the man's varna rank is equal or higher and 0 when it is lower, so this pair scores 1 with the Pisces partner as the man and 0 the other way round.
The 2/12 Axis / भकूट
One sign sits in the other's 2nd house — family, savings, speech — while that other sits in its 12th, the house of loss and expenditure. The classical reading is asymmetric: the partner in the 12th position tends to give more than they receive, in money and in effort. Of the three Bhakoot doshas this is the one most often cited in refusals, because it names a specific and durable imbalance rather than a general difficulty.
Dwirdwadash dosha applies and is not cancelled by the standard exception
Saturn and Jupiter are not natural friends, so Graha Maitri scores 3 of 5 rather than the full 5 that cancels Bhakoot. Other cancellations exist — a shared nakshatra lord is the common one — but they need both birth nakshatras, not the signs.
The Two Sign Lords in Each Other’s Signs
Guna Milan never asks where each sign’s lord would stand in the other’s sign — but the question is answerable from the two rashis alone, and the answer differs across all 66 pairs of different signs. Saturn, the lord of Aquarius, is in a neutral sign in Pisces, and Jupiter, the lord of Pisces, is in a neutral sign in Aquarius. Neither direction is dramatic, so this test neither helps nor harms the pair.
Lord of Aquarius · सम क्षेत्र
Pisces belongs to Jupiter, toward whom Saturn is neither friendly nor hostile. Saturn is therefore neither strengthened nor weakened in Pisces — on this test the pair is simply not commented on in that direction, which is a more honest answer than manufacturing one.
Lord of Pisces · सम क्षेत्र
Turned around, the answer is the same: Aquarius belongs to Saturn, Jupiter is neither friendly nor hostile toward Saturn, and so Jupiter is neither strengthened nor weakened in Aquarius. Neutral in both directions — six of the 66 pairs — means the dignity test declines to comment on this match at all, which is worth knowing before someone reads a silence as approval.
A dignity is not a score and there is no guna attached to it — this is a statement about how comfortably each sign’s lord sits in the other’s territory, which is the sort of thing an astrologer reads from the chart and a compatibility percentage cannot encode. In a real kundli match it would be weighed against where those planets actually fall in the two birth charts, which can strengthen or override it.
Mobility — Sthira and Dvisvabhava
The twelve rashis divide three ways by mobility: Aquarius is Sthira (fixed) and Pisces is Dvisvabhava (dual). Sthira meets Dvisvabhava. The fixed sign supplies the position and the dual sign supplies the flexibility around it, which is a workable arrangement so long as the dual partner's adaptability is not mistaken for agreement.
Mobility carries no guna either, and it is not the same distinction as element — it describes how a sign holds a position rather than what it cares about, which is why it explains a different class of argument from the Air-versus-Water one below.
Aquarius in a Relationship
Aquarius wants a friend first and a partner second, and the friendship is not a lesser thing — it is what makes the rest durable. It is loyal, unpossessive, and genuinely uninterested in conventional expectations of how a couple should behave.
What it needs
Independence, intellectual respect, and space that is not negotiated for. Aquarius needs to be left alone sometimes without it meaning anything.
Where it goes wrong
Emotional detachment at exactly the moment closeness is wanted. Aquarius processes feeling as an idea, which the partner experiences as being held at a distance during the hardest conversations.
Aquarius horoscope →Pisces in a Relationship
Pisces gives more than it is asked for and reads its partner's state before being told. It is romantic in the literal sense — it forms an image of the relationship and then loves the image with real devotion, sometimes past the point where the actual relationship supports it.
What it needs
Gentleness, emotional attunement, and a partner who does not exploit the willingness to give.
Where it goes wrong
The boundaries are porous, so Pisces absorbs the partner's moods and loses its own position. Difficulty is avoided rather than addressed — the escape can be literal — and the idealisation makes it slow to see who the partner actually is.
Pisces horoscope →Where the Friction Sits
Aquarius works in Air and Pisces in Water, which is where the recurring misunderstanding will live. It shows up as a difference in pace and in what each treats as obvious rather than as a difference in intention. Saturn and Jupiter set different priorities, and in practice the argument is usually between those two priorities rather than between the two people.
Read the two profiles above against each other and the specific fault line is usually obvious: “Emotional detachment at exactly the moment closeness is wanted” meeting “the boundaries are porous, so Pisces absorbs the partner's moods and loses its own position” is the pattern this pair will keep returning to.

Get the Other 23 Guna
Nadi, Gana, Yoni and Tara account for 21 of the 36 guna and all four need both birth nakshatras — which need birth time and place, not just the sign. Kundli matching calculates the full Ashtakoota, plus Mangal dosha and the 7th house, which sit outside Guna Milan entirely.
