Rashi Ke Swami Grah: The 12 Rashi Lords List

Published 2026-10-26 | Live Pandit Ji

Rashi Ka Swami Kaun Hai? (राशि का स्वामी)

Each of the twelve rashis has one graha assigned to it as its swami, its owner or lord. The assignment is fixed: it belongs to the sign, not to any person or any chart, so Mesh has the same swami whoever’s kundli it appears in. Only seven grahas take part, the Sun through Saturn. Rahu and Ketu own no rashi in this scheme, a point taken up further down.

The list below is the Parashari assignment, the one every chart and calculator on this site reads. It is short, and once you have it, several other kundli terms become easy to decode: the lord of a house is simply the swami of whichever rashi sits in that house, and the dispositor of a graha is the swami of the rashi it occupies.

The Rashi Swami List: All Twelve, Mesh to Meen

The number in the first column is the rashi’s place in the zodiac, counted from Mesh. It is also the number you see printed inside the boxes of a North Indian kundli. The rashi is given in Devanagari, in its common Hindi spelling and, where it differs, in its Sanskrit form; the swami in English, Hindi and Devanagari.

The spellings vary in print. Vrishabh and Vrishabha, Kark and Karka, Kumbh and Kumbha name the same rashi; the shorter forms are how Hindi usually says them, and the longer ones keep the Sanskrit final vowel. The element column runs Fire, Earth, Air, Water and then repeats, three times round, which is a property of the signs and has nothing to do with their lords.

Four common forms of the question, each answered from the table:

  • Tula rashi ke swami grah kaun hai? Shukra, that is Venus (तुला is rashi 7).
  • Kark rashi ke swami grah kaun hai? Chandra, that is the Moon (कर्क is rashi 4).
  • Makar rashi ke swami grah kaun hai? Shani, that is Saturn (मकर is rashi 10).
  • Kumbh rashi ke swami grah kaun hai? Shani, that is Saturn (कुम्भ is rashi 11).

Makar and Kumbh sit side by side and share Saturn as their swami, the only two neighbouring rashis in the list with one owner.

N Number Ki Rashi Ka Swami (9 नंबर की राशि का स्वामी)

A North Indian kundli has twelve fixed compartments, and the houses never move: the top-centre diamond is always the 1st house. What changes from one birth to another is the small number written in each compartment, and that number names a rashi, not a house. So “9 number ki rashi” means the 9th rashi from Mesh, which is Dhanu (धनु, Sagittarius), and its swami is Guru (Jupiter). The compartment the 9 sits in tells you which house Dhanu occupies in that particular chart; the swami stays Guru wherever the 9 lands. The kundli symbols and abbreviations page walks through reading those numbers and the graha codes beside them.

For a quick lookup, read the number off the box and find it here:

Number123456789101112
SwamiMangalShukraBudhChandraSuryaBudhShukraMangalGuruShaniShaniGuru

Two numbers in a chart get asked about more than the rest. The number in the top-centre box is the lagna rashi, so its swami is the lagnesh. The number in the box holding the Moon (marked Mo, or चं on Hindi charts) is the Moon’s rashi, the one a rashifal is written for, and its swami is the rashi swami people usually mean when they ask “meri rashi ka swami kaun hai”. Those two are often different grahas; the last section explains why.

Grah and Their Rashis: The List Turned Round

Reading the same table from the graha’s side gives the own signs, or swa-rashi, of each one. The site’s planet table lists them separately, and the two sources agree row for row:

GrahaRashis ownedKundli numbers
Sun: Surya (सूर्य)Singh (Leo)5
Moon: Chandra (चन्द्र)Kark (Cancer)4
Mars: Mangal (मंगल)Mesh (Aries) and Vrishchik (Scorpio)1, 8
Mercury: Budh (बुध)Mithun (Gemini) and Kanya (Virgo)3, 6
Jupiter: Guru (गुरु)Dhanu (Sagittarius) and Meen (Pisces)9, 12
Venus: Shukra (शुक्र)Vrishabh (Taurus) and Tula (Libra)2, 7
Saturn: Shani (शनि)Makar (Capricorn) and Kumbh (Aquarius)10, 11
Rahu (राहु)None — Rahu co-lords Aquarius and is said to act as its dispositor
Ketu (केतु)None — Ketu co-lords Scorpio and is said to act as its dispositor

The arithmetic is tidy. The Sun and the Moon own one rashi each; the other five own two each. Two plus ten is twelve, so every rashi has exactly one swami and none is left over. Another small fact from the table: none of the five two-rashi grahas owns two rashis of the same element. Mars’s pair is Fire and Water, Saturn’s Earth and Air.

The two node rows are quoted from the planet table exactly as they stand. In the swami list Aquarius belongs to Saturn and Scorpio to Mars, without exception; the co-lordship is a separate idea that some practitioners add beside those two rashis, and the Rahu and Ketu uchch-neech page sets out what the planet table records for the nodes’ signs in full. Western astrology also names Pluto, Uranus and Neptune as co-rulers of three signs. None of them is a graha, and they appear in no Jyotish swami list.

The Pattern in the Swami List

Write the twelve swamis in a circle and a symmetry shows. Put the dividing line between rashi 4 and rashi 5, Kark and Singh. Kark belongs to the Moon and Singh to the Sun, the two luminaries, side by side. Step one rashi outward on each side and the swamis match; step again and they match again, all the way round to the far side of the circle, where Makar and Kumbh meet. The program that renders this page checks each step against the sign table, and the five pairs it finds are:

  1. One step out: Mithun (3) and Kanya (6), both Budh (Mercury).
  2. Two steps out: Vrishabh (2) and Tula (7), both Shukra (Venus).
  3. Three steps out: Mesh (1) and Vrishchik (8), both Mangal (Mars).
  4. Four steps out: Meen (12) and Dhanu (9), both Guru (Jupiter).
  5. Five steps out: Kumbh (11) and Makar (10), both Shani (Saturn).

Two further facts sit inside it. Each of the five two-rashi grahas has one rashi in the run from Singh to Makar (numbers 5 to 10) and its other rashi in the run from Kumbh round to Kark (11 to 4). And the order in which the grahas appear as you move outward, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, is the Chaldean order of the seven grahas run backwards with the two luminaries taken out. The site keeps that order (Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon) because the weekday lords are built on it.

Jyotish teachers commonly explain the sequence by the grahas’ periods round the zodiac: the quicker ones placed close to the luminaries, the slower ones farther out. The site’s own transit table supports part of that and not all of it. For the outer three it gives Mars 687 days, Jupiter 11.86 years and Saturn 29.46 years for a full circuit, increasing exactly as you move outward. For Mercury and Venus it gives “about a year (geocentric)”, the same as the Sun, because seen from the earth neither strays far from the Sun; on that measure the two cannot be told apart, and the explanation needs their periods round the Sun, which the table does not record. The symmetry is a fact of the list. The reason for it is the tradition’s account.

Your Rashi’s Swami and Your Lagna’s Swami Are Different Things

“Rashi” in everyday use means the Moon’s rashi at birth, the chandra rashi. The lagna is the rashi rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth, and because the earth turns, the rising rashi changes several times a day. The Moon stays in one rashi for about 2¼ days, so for one birth the two are usually different rashis, with different swamis. A person with the Moon in Tula and Mesh rising has Shukra as rashi swami and Mangal as lagnesh. Neither replaces the other; they answer different questions, and the rashi and lagna page sets the two side by side. Lords of the other eleven houses are a third thing again, worked out lagna by lagna on the house-lord names page, and the swami of the rashi a graha occupies, its dispositor, is followed link by link on the dispositor page.

To find your own chandra rashi, the Moon sign calculator works it out from birth date, time and place and prints its ruling graha beside it. The rashi by name tool answers a different question: it matches the opening syllable of a name to the nakshatra-pada syllables of the naming tradition and shows every rashi that syllable belongs to, two where a syllable is shared. That is the naam rashi. It matches the birth rashi only when the name was chosen from the syllable of the Moon’s pada at birth, and a first letter alone is not enough to settle it. The twelve rashis themselves, with their daily rashifal pages, are listed on the horoscope hub.

What This Page Does Not Do

It gives the owner of each rashi and the pattern in that list, nothing more. It does not describe the temperament of anyone born under a rashi, does not say what a swami brings to a chart, and does not read your kundli or time anything in your life. Whether a graha is strong or weak in its own rashi, and what a reader of charts makes of that, is outside this list. In Hindi: राशि के स्वामी ग्रह: 12 राशियों के स्वामी की सूची.

Every Swami in Your Own Chart

The Janam Kundli report computes your lagna, gives its lord and where that lord sits, lists the twelve houses with their rashis and swamis, and for each of the seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn names the ruler of the rashi it occupies. It contains no predictions, verdicts or remedies, and it does not place Rahu and Ketu for a birth.
