Leo Rashifal January 2027 (Simha Rashi): Mars Turns Retrograde on Your Sign

Published 2026-08-20 | Live Pandit Ji

Simha Rashi has had two planets sitting on it for months — Mars and Jupiter both in Leo — and January takes them apart in the most awkward possible order. On Sunday 10 January at 6:24 pm, Mars turns retrograde while still on your rashi. Fifteen days later, at 2:15 am on Monday 25 January, Jupiter leaves Leo altogether and crosses into Cancer, your twelfth house, where it becomes exalted.

Read that second sentence again, because it is the shape of the month for Simha. Jupiter becomes the strongest it can be, and it does so by walking off your sign and into the house of loss. Simha Rashi is the sign for which January’s best event is also a departure.

Mars Turns Retrograde on Simha Rashi

Mars reverses direction roughly once every two years, which makes this a much rarer event than the Mercury retrogrades everyone has heard of, and a much more physical one. It happens at 6:24 pm on Sunday 10 January, and for Simha it happens in the first house — on your own rashi, in the sign that describes you rather than a department of your life.

Mars in the first house is drive applied directly to the self: initiative, temper, physical energy, the willingness to go first. Retrograde does not delete that. It turns it inward and makes it ineffective when pointed outward. The reliable observable is that the ordinary way you get things done — deciding, pushing, moving — stops producing results in proportion to the effort. People report feeling as energetic as ever and getting nowhere, which is the most frustrating combination available.

The useful response is specific rather than philosophical. Between 10 January and the spring, do not start anything that depends on your own forward momentum to survive its first month. Confrontations go badly. Ultimatums get called. Physical injuries in this period tend to come from doing something at the pace you are used to rather than the pace your body currently has.

Where this goes matters, and Simha natives should have the dates. Mars keeps reversing until 1 April 2027, and on the way it leaves Leo entirely — crossing into Cancer, where it is debilitated, on 10 March 2027. It turns direct there, then walks back onto your rashi on 26 April 2027. So the retrograde takes your co-ruler off your sign and into its weakest placement before returning it. January is the beginning of that, not the whole of it.

Jupiter Leaves Your Rashi to Become Exalted

Jupiter has been in Leo, on your sign, and turned retrograde there on 13 December 2026. Backward motion from Leo leads to Cancer, and it crosses at 2:15 am on Monday 25 January. Cancer is Jupiter’s sign of exaltation. It is also, counted from Leo, your twelfth house.

The twelfth house is expenditure, foreign matters, hospitals, retreat, and things that leave. An exalted planet in the twelfth is a real and specific pattern: the planet is strong, and its strength is spent on things that do not show. For Jupiter that reads as generosity, expenses that are worth it, travel, study taken up privately, and support that arrives without being visible to anyone else. It is not a bad placement. It is an invisible one.

It is worth knowing how long this lasts, because the answer is short. Jupiter turns direct on 13 April 2027 while still in Cancer and then walks forward out of it, re-entering Leo — and your first house — on 26 June 2027 at 4:48 am. So Simha gets its Jupiter back in five months. Whatever this transit costs you in visible support between now and June, it returns to your own sign in the summer, and it stays there for the rest of 2027.

That is the honest framing for Simha Rashi: the first half of 2027 is the expensive half and the second half is the one that pays. Plan cash flow accordingly rather than emotionally.

Ardha Ashtama Shani Continues in Your Eighth House

Saturn is in Pisces for the whole of January, and Pisces is the eighth house from Leo. Saturn transiting the eighth house from the natal Moon has its own classical name — Ardha Ashtama Shani, sometimes rendered as the half-eighth Saturn — and it is one of the three Saturn transits the tradition singles out for difficulty, alongside Sade Sati and Kantaka Shani.

The eighth house covers shared money, inheritance, debt, insurance, other people’s resources, and things that are transformed rather than improved. Saturn there does what Saturn does: it slows the department down and audits it. In practice that means joint finances take longer than expected, claims and settlements drag, and anything that was informally arranged gets formally examined. It is not destructive. It is slow, and it does not accept vagueness.

The end of it is calculable and worth writing down. Saturn first reaches Aries — the ninth from Leo, and out of the eighth — on 3 June 2027. It then retreats back into Pisces on 20 October 2027, reviving the condition for about four months, and settles into Aries for good on 23 February 2028. So Ardha Ashtama Shani for Simha Rashi ends in stages, and the definitive date is February 2028. Our Shani remedies page covers the observances, and Saturday fasting is the most commonly kept of them.

Your Ruler and the Sankranti Ingress

Simha Rashi is ruled by the Sun, and in January the Sun moves from Sagittarius, your fifth house, into Capricorn, your sixth, at 9:05 pm on Thursday 14 January. That instant is the Makar Sankranti ingress — the Sun’s sidereal entry into Capricorn — and for Simha it means your ruler spends the second half of the month in the house of work, obstacles, health and service.

A sixth-house Sun is not weak; it is unglamorous. It favours getting through a workload over being recognised for it. Combined with a retrograde Mars on your rashi, the second half of January is a stretch where effort is high and visibility is low. Mercury arrives in the same house on the 10th and Rahu has been there since December, so the sixth house is crowded — which typically shows up as competitors, workload, or a health matter that needs a proper appointment rather than an opinion.

The Two Lunations

The New Moon of 1:54 am on Friday 8 January sits at 23.1° of Sagittarius in Purva Ashadha pada 3 — the quarter running 20°00′ to 23°20′ — which lands in your fifth house. Purva Ashadha is ruled by Venus, and Venus had left its own sign a week earlier, so the lunation’s lord is undignified at the moment it happens. Fifth-house New Moons suit children, study and creative work, and this one is worth using early in the month while Mars is still direct.

The Full Moon at 5:47 pm on Friday 22 January falls at 8° of Cancer in Pushya pada 2, in your twelfth house — three days before Jupiter arrives in the same sign. A twelfth-house Full Moon brings something to a head out of public view: an expense that has to be settled, a private matter that resolves, occasionally a decision about leaving something. It is not a date for announcements.

Key Dates for Simha Rashi in January 2027

  • 8 January, 1:54 am: New Moon at 23.1° of Sagittarius, Purva Ashadha pada 3, in your fifth house.
  • 10 January — the pivot of the month: Mercury enters Capricorn, your sixth house, at 12:34 am; then Mars turns retrograde on your own rashi at 6:24 pm.
  • 14 January, 9:05 pm: the Sun — your ruler — crosses into Capricorn at the Makar Sankranti ingress, taking your sixth house.
  • 22 January, 5:47 pm: Full Moon at 8° of Cancer, Pushya pada 2, in your twelfth house.

Week by Week

1–7 January

The last week in which your ordinary methods work normally, and the week to use for anything that needs a decisive start. Mars is still direct on your rashi and Jupiter is still on it too, which is the strongest first house Simha will have for months. Venus is dignified in your third house until late on the 1st. If there is one initiative in this quarter that depends on you driving it, begin it here.

8–14 January

The turn. The New Moon in your fifth house on Friday the 8th is a good date for a study or creative commitment. Then Sunday the 10th carries Mercury into your sixth house after midnight and Mars into retrograde that evening — the single most consequential hour of the month for Simha. From the 11th onwards, treat your own momentum as unreliable and build in slack. On Thursday the 14th the Sun follows into your sixth house, and the workload half of the month begins.

15–22 January

The heaviest stretch. Sun, Mercury and Rahu are together in your sixth house while Mars is retrograde on your rashi — high effort, low recognition, and a tendency to take on more because Rahu in the sixth makes competition feel urgent. The Full Moon of Friday the 22nd in your twelfth house closes the week privately rather than publicly. Keep the diary lighter than you think you need to.

23–31 January

Jupiter leaves your rashi at 2:15 am on Monday the 25th. The plain effect is that the cushion comes off: things that have been going more easily than they should have been start requiring their real amount of effort. The compensation is that Jupiter is now exalted in your twelfth, which supports expenditure that is genuinely worth making, travel, and study taken up quietly. Mercury moves to your seventh house on the 28th, which is the month’s better window for a conversation with a partner or client.

Career and Money for Simha Rashi

January is a working month rather than an advancing one. From the 14th your ruler is in the sixth house, which rewards throughput; the tenth house has no tenant. Do not read the absence of recognition as a verdict. The retrograde Mars means that the usual Simha approach — take the lead, push it through — is the wrong tool between the 10th and the spring. Delegation and patience will outperform it, which is not comfortable advice for this sign.

Money has two features. Saturn in the eighth house continues to slow anything joint, borrowed or inherited, and asks for documentation. And Jupiter exalted in the twelfth from the 25th tends to increase outflow — usually on things that are defensible, sometimes on things that only feel defensible. Set the budget before the 25th rather than after.

Relationships and Family

The retrograde Mars on your own sign is the main relationship risk this month, and the mechanism is temper rather than circumstance. Mars reversed in the first house shortens the fuse and lengthens the recovery, and it makes an argument you would normally have won and forgotten sit unresolved. The practical rule for the second half of January: do not have the difficult conversation on a day when you are already irritated, because the irritation is the transit and not the topic.

Mercury enters your seventh house on the 28th, which is the better window. Venus takes your fourth house from 1 January, so home matters have some support even though it is undistinguished support.

Health

This is the section that matters most for Simha this month, and the advice is unusually concrete. A retrograde Mars in the first house is classically associated with injury from over-exertion and with inflammatory complaints, and the sixth house is crowded from the 10th onwards with the Sun, Mercury and Rahu. Reduce load rather than intensity in the gym. If something has been bothering you physically, get it looked at properly in January instead of managing it — Rahu in the sixth is precisely the placement under which people self-diagnose confidently and wrongly.

Remedies for Simha Rashi in January 2027

Three priorities, in order: settle the retrograde Mars on your rashi, keep the eighth-house Saturn observance going, and do not fight the twelfth-house Jupiter — direct it.

  • Hanuman Chalisa on the four Tuesdays — 5, 12, 19 and 26 January: Mars turns retrograde on your own rashi on the 10th, which makes Tuesday observance the first item on this list rather than a routine one. The 12th, 19th and 26th all fall after the station. See our Mars page.
  • Saturday observance for Shani — 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 January: Saturn is in your eighth house in Ardha Ashtama Shani and does not leave for good until February 2028. Sesame oil, black til and iron, and a lamp under a peepal tree at dusk. Our Shani remedies page has the full set.
  • Do not start a fight you would normally win: the practical form of a retrograde first-house Mars, and the most useful line on this page. Between the 10th and April, the argument you are confident about is the one that will run on.
  • Sunday observance for the Sun — 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 January: the Sun rules Simha Rashi and spends the second half of the month in your sixth house, where it is doing unrewarded work. Water offered at sunrise, wheat, and jaggery. Our Sun page sets out the rest.
  • Guru worship on the four Thursdays — 7, 14, 21 and 28 January: Jupiter leaves your rashi on the 25th for an exalted twelfth-house placement. Thursday observance here is about directing that expenditure rather than preventing it. Chana dal, turmeric and yellow cloth, and see the remedies for a weak Guru.
  • Get the physical thing checked in January: not a ritual, and the item most likely to matter. Rahu in the sixth house encourages confident self-diagnosis, and a retrograde Mars in the first encourages carrying on regardless.
  • Set the budget before the 25th: an exalted Jupiter in the twelfth house raises spending on things that are genuinely worth it, which is exactly why a limit written in advance works better than judgement applied at the time.
  • Give something away in the last week: the twelfth house is the house of release, and Jupiter is exalted in it from the 25th. Donation in this window is the observance best matched to the actual sky rather than to the calendar.

In Summary

January 2027 dismantles the pair of planets that has been sitting on Simha Rashi, and it does it in the harder order. Mars turns retrograde on your own sign at 6:24 pm on Sunday the 10th, and stays reversed until 1 April — which means your normal way of getting things done stops working in proportion to the effort you put into it. Then Jupiter leaves your rashi at 2:15 am on Monday the 25th and becomes exalted in Cancer, your twelfth house. The strongest Jupiter available is now spending its strength where it does not show.

The compensating fact is the calendar. Jupiter is back on Simha Rashi on 26 June 2027 and stays for the rest of the year, so the first half of 2027 is the expensive half and the second is the one that returns something. Mars comes back to your sign on 26 April after a debilitated stretch in Cancer. Neither of these is a permanent condition.

Underneath both, Saturn holds your eighth house in Ardha Ashtama Shani. It first steps out on 3 June 2027, returns for about four months from 20 October 2027, and is finished on 23 February 2028. In the meantime it will keep slowing down anything joint, borrowed or inherited, and it will keep asking for the paperwork.

How sharply a retrograde Mars on the rashi lands depends on your natal Moon’s exact degree and on which of the nine Leo padas holds it — Mars only reverses across part of the sign before leaving it in March, so whether it crosses your own degree is a specific question. What the Leo rashi fixes and what it leaves open deals with the padas, the Jupiter transit guide covers the exaltation across all twelve signs, and the December reading covers what led into this month.

Does the retrograde Mars cross your Moon’s degree?

Mars reverses across part of Leo before leaving it in March. Whether it passes over your natal Moon’s own degree decides how much of this you feel. A chart reading gives you those weeks instead of the three-month average.
