December’s single most exact event happens on your sign. At 3:46 am on Sunday 12 December the Sun and Mercury stand at the same degree — 25°23′ of Scorpio, in Jyeshtha pada 3. It falls on a Sunday, which is the Sun’s own weekday.

There is a detail in that which belongs to Vrishchika and to no other sign. Jyeshtha’s ruling planet is Mercury. So Mercury is burnt by the Sun while standing in a nakshatra it rules itself, on the sign you were born under. And Mercury is not briefly burnt: it is inside the classical twelve-degree asta orb on every one of December’s thirty-one days, about six degrees behind the Sun on the 1st and about eleven ahead on the 31st.

Then both of them leave. Mercury crosses into Sagittarius at 2:03 am on Wednesday 15 December and the Sun at 4:33 pm on Thursday 16 December. From that afternoon, Vrishchika holds no graha at all for the last fifteen days of the year, apart from the Moon’s ordinary two-day visit. Your sign empties.

Mercury Burnt in Its Own Nakshatra

Combustion in the classical texts is not a moral judgement, it is a visibility condition: a planet too near the Sun cannot be seen, and what cannot be seen cannot deliver what it signifies. The twelve degrees usually quoted for Mercury is a convention rather than a measurement, which is why this page gives you the separations and lets you judge. What is not in doubt is the direction of travel — the gap narrows to nothing at 3:46 am on Sunday 12 December and then reopens on the far side.

Mercury governs speech, contracts, calculation and every kind of intermediary. For Vrishchika it rules your eighth house and your eleventh — inheritance, joint finances and insurance on one side, income and networks on the other. Jupiter spends the whole of December in Virgo, your eleventh house of income and networks, moving only 0°32′ to 3°03′ and never leaving Uttara Phalguni pada 2. From there its fifth, seventh and ninth aspects fall on your third house, your fifth and your seventh.

Those are exactly the three houses December fills. Your third collects Rahu all month, Venus from the 15th and an exalted Mars from the 27th. Your fifth holds Saturn, which turns direct on the 24th. Your seventh takes the Full Moon. Every one of them is under the benefic’s eye for all thirty-one days, which is the main reason this month reads as workable rather than punishing.

Note what Jupiter does not aspect: your own sign, and the second house the Sun moves into. So the two places the month actually squeezes are the two places help does not reach. That is a fair description of December for Vrishchika — support around the edges, exposure at the centre.
