Blue Sapphire for a Virgo Ascendant

The verdict
The Split Verdict
For a Virgo ascendant, Saturn owns the 5th and the 6th, the 5th is a trikona and the 6th a dusthana, so the two lordships pull against each other — which makes Neelam a genuinely split verdict that needs the chart to settle.
This is the rule for Virgo (Kanya) read as an ascendant. Whether blue sapphire is actually your stone depends on where Saturn sits in that chart — owning the 5th and the 6th is not the same as occupying the 5th and the 6th — how strong it is, and which dasha you are running. That is a reading, not a table lookup.

Where the 5th and 6th Lordship Comes From
Saturn owns Capricorn and Aquarius. Counting from Virgo as the first house, Capricorn is the 5th and Aquarius is the 6th — which is the whole of it. Two signs, two houses — the 5th and the 6th from Virgo — and the verdict on blue sapphire turns on which of the two carries more weight.
Virgo is the case the one-line tables cannot handle. The 5th is a trikona and argues for the stone; the 6th is a dusthana and argues against it. The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra holds trikona lordship the stronger of the two, so the 5th carries and the verdict leans favourable. But leaning is not the same as settled, and a Virgo native with Saturn in the 6th is not the same case as one with Saturn well placed.
The Virgo gemstone page states this as a single line — “Blue Sapphire (Saturn, 5th and 6th lord)” — and lists it among the stones that help this ascendant.
Wearing It Alongside Emerald
Emerald is the Virgo primary stone, because Mercury rules Virgo (Kanya) and owns the 1st and the 10th from it. So the pairing a Virgo native is most likely to consider is blue sapphire with emerald, and whether that is allowed depends on how Saturn and Mercury rate each other.
Saturn rates Mercury a friend, and Mercury rates Saturn a neutral. No enmity in either direction, so the combination is permitted.
On blue sapphire generally: The one stone tradition insists you trial-wear. Tie it to the arm or wear it for three to seven days first. Neelam is held to act fastest of the nine and in either direction, and it must never be combined with Ruby, Pearl or Red Coral.
Saturn in Virgo Itself
House lordship is one axis and sign dignity is another, and for a Virgo ascendant they do not always agree. Saturn is exalted in Libra and debilitated in Aries, and Virgo is neither. So there is no dignity bonus and no dignity penalty for a Virgo ascendant, and the verdict on blue sapphire rests entirely on the 5th and the 6th.
Saturn governs karma, discipline, longevity and hard work, and its mahadasha runs 19 years. For a Virgo native those years read through the 5th and the 6th — which is the practical reason the lordship above matters more than the stone's reputation does.
How to Wear It as a Virgo Ascendant
- Fix the weight first — roughly one ratti per ten kilograms of body weight, three to five ratti as a practical minimum. Confirm whether the quote is in the 0.9-carat ratti or the traditional 0.12-gram one.
- Judge the stone before the setting. Should be transparent enough to read light through, with no silk cloud and no chipped edges. A Neelam with a crack, a milky patch or a red tinge is rejected in Ratna Shastra regardless of what it costs. Colour to expect: cornflower to royal blue; not inky black-blue.
- Set it in silver / Panchadhatu with the back left open so the stone rests on skin, and wear it on the middle finger of the right hand. These follow Saturn, not Virgo, so they differ from what the Virgo primary stone asks for.
- Wash the ring in raw milk, honey, ghee, curd and clean water, place it before Shani, and chant ॐ प्रां प्रीं प्रौं सः शनैश्चराय नमः — Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanaishcharaya Namah — 23,000 times, or have the japa performed for you.
- Put it on for the first time on Saturday evening, and fast on Saturday to support the same graha.
- You may keep emerald, the Virgo primary stone, on at the same time, since Saturn and Mercury carry no enmity either way. Observe the first thirty days and remove it if anything worsens sharply.
Because the 5th and the 6th pulls in two directions from Virgo, the trial matters more here than it does for a straightforward recommendation. Tie the stone to the arm or wear it for three to seven days before committing to a setting.
The Ascendants Blue Sapphire Reads Differently For
The same stone is not the same advice from every ascendant, and blue sapphire is a clear example. From Virgo the verdict is split rather than settled. The two ascendants below read differently, and nothing about Saturn or about blue sapphire has changed: Capricorn and Aquarius land on different houses when the counting starts from a different lagna.
Saturn owns the 11th and the 12th from Pisces — a stone to avoid.
Saturn owns the 7th and the 8th from Cancer — a stone to avoid.

Everything above follows from Virgo being the ascendant and nothing else. Saturn owning the 5th and the 6th is not the same as Saturn sitting there; where it actually sits, whether it is combust or retrograde, and which dasha is running can move this verdict either way.
