lagna nakshatra
The Ascendant in Ashlesha Nakshatra
Cancer rising · nakshatra lord Mercury · 62 minutes at Delhi
A lagna in Ashlesha, the 9th nakshatra, means Cancer rising, whichever pada the degree is in, with the Moon as lagna lord. Ashlesha itself is ruled by Mercury. The Moon counts Mercury a friend, while Mercury counts the Moon an enemy.
By sign, Mercury, Ashlesha’s lord, is in an enemy's sign in Cancer, the lagna sign. In the navamsa each pada sets, that pada’s lagna lord is in a neutral sign in pada 1 (Sagittarius), in a neutral sign in pada 2 (Capricorn), in a neutral sign in pada 3 (Aquarius) and in a neutral sign in pada 4 (Pisces).
How Long Ashlesha Takes to Rise
The ascendant crosses Ashlesha’s 13°20′ in 62 minutes at Delhi, 60 minutes at Kolkata, 59 minutes at Mumbai and 57 minutes at Chennai. At Delhi that makes Ashlesha the 24th-fastest of the 27. The difference between the four cities is about 6 minutes, the 15th-smallest of any nakshatra, and Ashlesha’s arc lies 48° from the June solstice point, which is what that figure tracks (the comparison table shows how). These are durations, not clock times. When Ashlesha actually rises depends on the date and the longitude, and a birth time a few minutes out moves the ascendant through a pada.

Pada 4 is a gandanta pada, at the junction of a water sign and the fire sign after it.
