lagna nakshatra
The Ascendant in Dhanishta Nakshatra
Capricorn / Aquarius rising · nakshatra lord Mars · 41 minutes at Delhi
A lagna in Dhanishta, the 23rd nakshatra, means Capricorn rising, whichever pada the degree is in, with Saturn as lagna lord. Dhanishta itself is ruled by Mars. Saturn counts Mars an enemy, while Mars counts Saturn neutral.
By sign, Mars, Dhanishta’s lord, is exalted in Capricorn and in a neutral sign in Aquarius, the lagna sign. In the navamsa each pada sets, that pada’s lagna lord is in an enemy's sign in pada 1 (Leo), in a friend's sign in pada 2 (Virgo), exalted in pada 3 (Libra) and in an enemy's sign in pada 4 (Scorpio).
How Long Dhanishta Takes to Rise
The ascendant crosses Dhanishta’s 13°20′ in 41 minutes at Delhi, 44 minutes at Kolkata, 45 minutes at Mumbai and 47 minutes at Chennai. At Delhi that makes Dhanishta the 6th-fastest of the 27. The difference between the four cities is about 6 minutes, the 17th-smallest of any nakshatra, and Dhanishta’s arc lies 54° from the December solstice point, which is what that figure tracks (the comparison table shows how). These are durations, not clock times. When Dhanishta actually rises depends on the date and the longitude, and a birth time a few minutes out moves the ascendant through a pada.
