lagna nakshatra
The Ascendant in Jyeshtha Nakshatra
Scorpio rising · nakshatra lord Mercury · 61 minutes at Delhi
A lagna in Jyeshtha, the 18th nakshatra, means Scorpio rising, whichever pada the degree is in, with Mars as lagna lord. Jyeshtha itself is ruled by Mercury. Mars counts Mercury an enemy, while Mercury counts Mars neutral.
By sign, Mercury, Jyeshtha’s lord, is in a neutral sign in Scorpio, the lagna sign. In the navamsa each pada sets, that pada’s lagna lord is in a friend's sign in pada 1 (Sagittarius), exalted in pada 2 (Capricorn), in a neutral sign in pada 3 (Aquarius) and in a friend's sign in pada 4 (Pisces).
How Long Jyeshtha Takes to Rise
The ascendant crosses Jyeshtha’s 13°20′ in 61 minutes at Delhi, 60 minutes at Kolkata, 60 minutes at Mumbai and 59 minutes at Chennai. At Delhi that makes Jyeshtha the 18th-fastest of the 27. The difference between the four cities is about 2 minutes, the 4th-smallest of any nakshatra, and Jyeshtha’s arc lies 12° from the December solstice point, which is what that figure tracks (the comparison table shows how). These are durations, not clock times. When Jyeshtha actually rises depends on the date and the longitude, and a birth time a few minutes out moves the ascendant through a pada.

Pada 4 is a gandanta pada, at the junction of a water sign and the fire sign after it.
