The Ascendant in Uttara Phalguni Nakshatra
Leo / Virgo rising · nakshatra lord Sun · 61 minutes at Delhi
A lagna in Uttara Phalguni, the 12th nakshatra, means one of two ascendants: Leo if the rising degree is in pada 1 or Virgo if the rising degree is in padas 2, 3 and 4. The pada therefore decides the lagna lord, the Sun for Leo or Mercury for Virgo, before anything else in the chart is read. Uttara Phalguni itself is ruled by the Sun. For Uttara Phalguni with Leo rising (pada 1) the lagna lord and the nakshatra lord are the same graha, the Sun. Mercury counts the Sun a friend, while the Sun counts Mercury neutral.
By sign, the Sun, Uttara Phalguni’s lord, is in its own sign in Leo and in a neutral sign in Virgo, the two signs a lagna here can be. In the navamsa each pada sets, that pada’s lagna lord is in a friend's sign in pada 1 (Sagittarius), in a neutral sign in pada 2 (Capricorn), in a neutral sign in pada 3 (Aquarius) and debilitated in pada 4 (Pisces).

The difference between the four cities is about 7 minutes, the 27th-smallest of any nakshatra, and Uttara Phalguni’s arc lies 88° from the June solstice point, which is what that figure tracks (the comparison table shows how). These are durations, not clock times. When Uttara Phalguni actually rises depends on the date and the longitude, and a birth time a few minutes out moves the ascendant through a pada.
