The Ascendant in Hasta Nakshatra
Virgo rising · nakshatra lord Moon · 61 minutes at Delhi
A lagna in Hasta, the 13th nakshatra, means Virgo rising, whichever pada the degree is in, with Mercury as lagna lord. Hasta itself is ruled by the Moon. Mercury counts the Moon an enemy, while the Moon counts Mercury a friend.
By sign, the Moon, Hasta’s lord, is in a friend's sign in Virgo, the lagna sign. In the navamsa each pada sets, that pada’s lagna lord is in a neutral sign in pada 1 (Aries), in a friend's sign in pada 2 (Taurus), in its own sign in pada 3 (Gemini) and in an enemy's sign in pada 4 (Cancer).
How Long Hasta Takes to Rise
The ascendant crosses Hasta’s 13°20′ in 61 minutes at Delhi, 58 minutes at Kolkata, 57 minutes at Mumbai and 54 minutes at Chennai. At Delhi that makes Hasta the 17th-fastest of the 27. The difference between the four cities is about 7 minutes, the 24th-smallest of any nakshatra, and Hasta’s arc lies 79° from the December solstice point, which is what that figure tracks (the comparison table shows how). These are durations, not clock times. When Hasta actually rises depends on the date and the longitude, and a birth time a few minutes out moves the ascendant through a pada.
