The Ascendant in Purva Ashadha Nakshatra
Sagittarius rising · nakshatra lord Venus · 54 minutes at Delhi
A lagna in Purva Ashadha, the 20th nakshatra, means Sagittarius rising, whichever pada the degree is in, with Jupiter as lagna lord. Purva Ashadha itself is ruled by Venus. Jupiter counts Venus an enemy, while Venus counts Jupiter neutral.
By sign, Venus, Purva Ashadha’s lord, is in a neutral sign in Sagittarius, the lagna sign. In the navamsa each pada sets, that pada’s lagna lord is in a friend's sign in pada 1 (Leo), in an enemy's sign in pada 2 (Virgo), in an enemy's sign in pada 3 (Libra) and in a friend's sign in pada 4 (Scorpio).
How Long Purva Ashadha Takes to Rise
The ascendant crosses Purva Ashadha’s 13°20′ in 54 minutes at Delhi, 55 minutes at Kolkata, 55 minutes at Mumbai and 56 minutes at Chennai. At Delhi that makes Purva Ashadha the 12th-fastest of the 27. The difference between the four cities is about 2 minutes, the 5th-smallest of any nakshatra, and Purva Ashadha’s arc lies 14° from the December solstice point, which is what that figure tracks (the comparison table shows how). These are durations, not clock times. When Purva Ashadha actually rises depends on the date and the longitude, and a birth time a few minutes out moves the ascendant through a pada.
