The 4th Lord in the 7th House

The 4th lord in the 7th house is the ruler of the 4th, the Sukha Bhava, placed in the 7th, the Kalatra Bhava. The 4th is a kendra and the 7th a kendra, so the 4th lord in the 7th joins two houses of the same class. Which graha that lord is depends on the ascendant, so the table below answers for all twelve.

Counted from the 4th, the 7th is the 4th house, which from any house is a kendra position; counted back from the 7th, the 4th is the 10th, a kendra and an upachaya position from it.

Across the twelve ascendants the 4th lord in the 7th is exalted for Pisces, in its own sign for Virgo, in a friend's sign for Taurus, Cancer and Scorpio, in a neutral sign for Aries, Gemini and Leo, in an enemy's sign for Sagittarius and Aquarius and debilitated for Libra and Capricorn. The Sun and the Moon rule one sign each, so for Aries and Taurus, where one of them is the 4th lord, it rules no other house; for the other ten the last column gives the second house the 4th lord brings with it to the 7th.

For Virgo ascendant the 4th lord, Jupiter, also rules the 7th, so in the 7th it sits in its own other sign, Pisces. For Pisces ascendant the 4th lord, Mercury, also rules the 7th, so in the 7th it sits in its own other sign, Virgo.

For Leo ascendant (Mars, ruling the 4th and 9th), Libra ascendant (Saturn, ruling the 4th and 5th) and Aquarius ascendant (Venus, ruling the 4th and 9th), the 4th lord rules both a kendra and a trikona other than the 1st, and in the 7th it is in a neutral sign for Leo, debilitated for Libra and in an enemy's sign for Aquarius.

The Reverse: the 7th Lord in the 4th

Where the 7th lord sits in the 4th in the same chart as the 4th lord in the 7th, each lord occupies the other’s sign, an exchange the texts call parivartana. That is possible for ten ascendants. For Virgo (Jupiter) and Pisces (Mercury) one graha rules both the 4th and the 7th, so there is nothing to exchange.
