Planetary Transits January 2027: Grah Gochar Dates
Published 2026-10-27 | Live Pandit Ji
January 2027 has 6 sign changes, more than either of the two months before it. Mercury and Venus each cross two boundaries, the Sun enters Capricorn, Mars stands still and turns retrograde, and Jupiter’s retrograde motion carries it back out of Leo. The full list is below. It is read off the site’s ingress table, computed from the JPL DE421 ephemeris in the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri ayanamsa), with times in Indian Standard Time.
Where the Grahas Stand on 1 January 2027
| Graha | Sign | Degree in sign | Nakshatra | Motion |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun (सूर्य) | Sagittarius (धनु) | 15°51′ | Purva Ashadha | direct |
| Mercury (बुध) | Sagittarius (धनु) | 15°18′ | Purva Ashadha | direct |
| Venus (शुक्र) | Libra (तुला) | 29°02′ | Vishakha | direct |
| Mars (मंगल) | Leo (सिंह) | 15°37′ | Purva Phalguni | direct |
| Jupiter (गुरु) | Leo (सिंह) | 2°13′ | Magha | retrograde |
| Saturn (शनि) | Pisces (मीन) | 14°05′ | Uttara Bhadrapada | direct |
| Rahu (राहु) | Capricorn (मकर) | mean node, not given | Dhanishta | retrograde |
| Ketu (केतु) | Cancer (कर्क) | mean node, not given | Ashlesha | retrograde |
The year opens with the Sun and Mercury less than a degree apart in Sagittarius, both in Purva Ashadha, and Venus in the last degree of Libra. Jupiter is the one retrograde graha apart from the nodes. A second joins it on 10 January 2027, when Mars stations, so the month ends with Mars and Jupiter both moving backwards. As in the earlier months, the nodes carry no degree because they are mean-node values.

Sign changes and lunations have clock times; stations, nakshatra changes and the Sun-Mercury conjunction are days. Mercury also passes Rahu in Capricorn during the month, but because the table’s Rahu is a mean node, that meeting is left undated. One clock time needs a warning, and it is explained under Jupiter below.
Mercury: Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius
On 1 January 2027 the Sun and Mercury reach the same longitude in Sagittarius, with Mercury moving direct. Mercury then pulls ahead, entering Capricorn at 00:34 IST on 10 January 2027 and Aquarius at 03:30 IST on 28 January 2027: only 18 days in Capricorn. The Mercury in Capricorn page has that stay in detail, and the Mercury transit 2027 page has every crossing of the year.
Venus Leaves Libra After Two Months
Venus has been in Libra, one of its two own signs in the site’s planet tables, since 22 November 2026, when it came back from its retrograde loop into Virgo. It crosses into Scorpio at 23:18 IST late on 1 January 2027, the first night of the year, and into Sagittarius at 18:37 IST on 29 January 2027, 28 days later. See the Venus in Scorpio page and the Venus transit 2027 list.
Mars Turns Retrograde in Leo on 10 January
Mars has been in Leo since November and starts the month in Purva Phalguni. It stations on 10 January 2027 and begins to move backwards. By 31 January it has slipped back into Magha. It stays in Leo throughout January; the retrograde takes it back into Cancer on 10 March 2027, and it turns direct there on 1 April 2027. The Mars transit 2027 page and the Mars retrograde 2027 page carry the rest of the loop.
Jupiter Backs Into Cancer on 25 January
Jupiter turned retrograde in Leo on 13 December 2026. Still moving backwards, it crosses into Cancer and Ashlesha nakshatra on 25 January 2027. Cancer is the sign the planet tables give as Jupiter’s exaltation, and Ketu has been there since 5 December, so from this date the two share the sign; the Guru-Ketu yuti page covers that stretch. Jupiter turns direct in Cancer on 13 April 2027 and returns to Leo on 26 June 2027.
The table puts the crossing at 02:15 IST. Take the date loosely. At Jupiter’s speed that moment is less than one arcminute of motion after midnight, so an almanac whose ayanamsa differs by a fraction of an arcminute can print 24 January and still be right. A list kept in UTC will also show 24 January, since 02:15 IST falls on the previous evening in UTC. The Jupiter transit 2027 page works through the same arithmetic.
The Sun Enters Capricorn on 14 January
The Sun crosses from Sagittarius into Capricorn, a sign of Saturn, at 21:05 IST on 14 January 2027. Its nakshatra moves from Purva Ashadha into Uttara Ashadha on 11 January and into Shravana on 24 January. The crossing comes late in the evening. The day on which the festival of the Sun’s entry into Capricorn is kept follows a separate rule, which the Makar Sankranti 2027 page explains; this page gives only the astronomical moment. Every solar entry of the year is on the Sun transit 2027 page.
Saturn, Rahu and Ketu
The three slowest grahas hold their signs all month. Saturn, direct since 11 December, moves forwards through Pisces. Rahu is in Capricorn and Ketu in Cancer, where the December shift put them, and neither moves again until 2028.
The New Moon and the Full Moon
The new Moon is at 01:54 IST on 8 January 2027, in Sagittarius and Purva Ashadha, in the small hours of the night. The full Moon is at 17:47 IST on 22 January 2027, with the Moon in Cancer and Pushya. The festival and vrat days around them, which follow tithi rules and not these instants, are on the January 2027 festival list.
January 2027 Gochar From Your Moon Sign
Count from your Moon sign as the 1st house. The table below does that for all twelve Moon signs, with an arrow wherever a graha changes sign, and so house, during January. Each Moon sign links to its January 2027 rashifal.

The Capricorn row shows how busy the month is. The Sun goes from the 12th to the 1st; Mercury from the 12th through the 1st to the 2nd; Venus from the 10th through the 11th to the 12th; and Jupiter falls back from the 8th to the 7th. Rahu stays on the Moon sign, the 1st, all month. The Moon’s own position from your Moon sign is Chandra Bala, and the Moon sign calculator gives your Moon sign from birth details.
What This Page Does Not Do
The page reports positions, crossings and house counts. It does not interpret them, and it does not date anything involving Rahu and Ketu more finely than the day. December’s list is on the December 2026 grah gochar page; station dates for every graha are on the retrograde planets hub.
The Birth Chart Behind the Count
The Janam Kundli report computes the chart these transits are counted against: your lagna and the twelve houses with their lords, and the sign, degree, nakshatra and house of the seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn, with every Vimshottari mahadasha and antardasha. It does not track transits and does not place Rahu and Ketu.
